Jon Barry's string of eight consecutive playoff appearances began in Atlanta.

After one season with the Denver Nuggets, the free-agent shooting guard is pois
ed to sign a contract with the Atlanta Hawks, according to an NBA source close
to the situation.
Barry, who averaged 6.2 points for Denver last season, makes his home in Atlant
a, and the move would allow him to stay close to his family.
Barry did not return telephone messages Monday.
A career .388 three-point shooter, Barry helped the Hawks to the playoffs in 19
97 and subsequently advanced to the postseason with the Los Angeles Lakers, the
Sacramento Kings, the Detroit Pistons and the Nuggets.
Keeping the streak alive will be difficult. The Hawks finished 26 games under .
500 in 2003-04 and made only modest upgrades this summer, adding Antoine Walker
, Tony Delk, Al Harrington and Predrag Drobnjak.
Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe expressed interest in re-signing the 35
-year-old Barry, but he also is exploring options such as guards Greg Buckner a
nd Dion Glover.
Buckner, waived by the Philadelphia 76ers last week, is high on Denver's list b
ecause of his defensive ability, and the Nuggets are his first choice.
However, a deal likely will not happen until the Nuggets spend the $2.3 million
they have remaining under the salary cap. Once the cap space is gone, Denver c
an begin using its unlimited number of minimum- salary exceptions.
