Stan Van Gundy, George Karl Named Coaches of Month
NEW YORK, April 1 –- Miami Heat head coach Stan Van Gundy and Denver Nuggets
head coach George Karl today were named the Eastern and Western Conference
Coaches of the Month for games played in March.
Van Gundy led the Heat to a 12-3 month and clinched the Southeast Division
title with a win over Phoenix on March 25. The Heat ranks first in the league
in field goal percentage (.494) and holds opponents to the second-lowest field
goal percentage (.415). The Heat recorded a 12-game winning streak from
February 26 until March 19, and currently holds the league’s longest home
winning streak with 17 wins at AmericanAirlines Arena.
Karl led the Nuggets to a 12-2 month, with their only two losses coming to the
Western Conference-leading Phoenix Suns. Denver ranked second in the league in
field goal percentage (.493) and second in points per game (109.2) for the
month, while averaging 117.1 points on 53.2 shooting over the last seven games.
Their loss to Phoenix on March 13 snapped an 8-game winning streak, the longe
st since the 1987-88 season.
Other nominees for the Coach of the Month award were Boston’s Doc Rivers,
Chicago’s Scott Skiles, Dallas’ Avery Johnson, Golden State’s Mike
Montgomery, Houston’s Jeff Van Gundy, Phoenix’s Mike D’Antoni and
Washington’s Eddie Jordan.
