Carmelo named player of the year

The Denver Nuggets' Carmelo Anthony was selected the 2006 USA Basketball Male
Athlete of the Year by USA Basketball today.
Anthony was the USA's leading scorer at the 2006 FIBA World Championship,
averaging nearly 20 points per game.
He was the only American named to the five-man All-Tournament Team, where
Team USA won the bronze.
"I'm very honored to receive this award," Anthony said. in a statement.
"I worked extremely hard over the summer to prepare because I take great
pride in playing for my country. I also want to thank my teammates.
Anthony said he looks forward to playing for the gold medal in 2008.
"The USA Basketball Executive Committee identified a well-deserving athlete
for this award," said USA Basketball Executive Director Jim Tooley. "Carmelo
was a team tri-captain and the USA's leading scorer.
The honor positions Anthony for the 2006 U.S. Olympic Committee award, which
will be announced later this month.
