Nickname: None. This needs to be changed immediately. How 'bout "The Bed"? Signature: Routinely baffling American League hitters while leading the Majors in strikeouts. Mysteries: Why does he spell his name with a "k" instead of a "c"? Is that why he has no nickname? How did he make the leap from good to great? Background When pitching guru Leo Mazzone left the Braves for the comforts of Camden Yards prior to the 2006 season, experts and fans alike expected immediate returns. With Mazzone's proven resume of turning trash into treasure, a season short of five Orioles Cy Young candidates would be considered a disappointment. And a disappointment it was. Thanks in large part to such waiver-wire stalwarts as Bruce Chen (6.93 ERA), Rodrigo Lopez (5.90 ERA) and future Waiver Hall of Famer Russ Ortiz (8.48 ERA), the Orioles finished the '06 campaign with a 5.65 ERA. If it weren't for a team known as the Kansas City Royals, that would have been "good" for worst in the Majors. But one of the few Orioles pitchers who seemed to thrive under Mazzone's tutelage last season was Erik Bedard. After finishing an injury-plagued 2005 campaign with a 6-8 record and 4.00 ERA, the Franco-Ontarian southpaw won 15 games and posted a sub-4.00 ERA for the first time in his young career. But with an ERA now hovering around 3.00 and leading the Majors in strikeouts, Bedard has left us all wondering: How did he make the leap from feel-good story to Cy Young candidate? To the evidence! The evidence Dr. Feelgood: Bedard managed to post solid numbers in 2006, only a season removed from missing about a dozen starts to a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee (whatever the heck that means). Even though he overcame that injury in '05, he was clearly feeling its effects as the year wore on, posting an 0-3 record and a 6.74 ERA in September. Now two full seasons removed from the injury, Bedard is no doubt pitching pain-free and -- as a result -- unleashing his fury on batters across North America. Special "k": With 192 strikeouts in 154 1/3 innings, Bedard has been using his trickery to record more outs than ever. His 11.20 K/9 ratio is a vast improvement over his 7.84 mark of a year ago, when he fanned "only" 171 batters in 196 1/3 innings. Which, of course, is why he spells his name with a "k" and not a "c." See? It all comes full circle. No batter: Bedard's increase in strikeouts has led to a decrease in hits allowed, which -- unsurprisingly -- has positively affected his WHIP. The 28-year-old southpaw has allowed a career-low 6.89 hits per nine innings this year en route to a sparkling 1.10 ratio, a marked improvement over his 1.35 mark from 2006. Feeling lucky: Not all of Bedard's dominance can be attributed to his ability or even Mazzone's tutelage (blasphemy?!?!). Sometimes a man just needs some luck. With a .288 batting average against on balls in play, Bedard has had Lady Luck on his side this go-round after finishing 2006 with a .314 BAABIP. Conspiracy theory It starts with Leo Mazzone and it ends with Leo Mazzone. As evidenced by Jeremy Guthrie's transformation from "Jeremy Guthrie, fringe Major League starter" to "The Guth," pitching equivalent of "Conan the Destroyer," Mazzone's alterations are as drastic as they are effective. Bedard's case is no different. No longer known as just some Franco-Ontarian pitcher who didn't start playing baseball until community college or start speaking English until starting university, Bedard has been molded into a one-man wrecking crew. And since a pitcher is only as good as his nickname (see The Rocket, The Big Unit and, obviously, The Guth), Bedard -- or, should I say, The Bed -- has proven to be no exception. 主要是在講為啥Bedard今年變這麼殺 Prospect+名投教(Leo Mazzone)=超級賽亞人 加油 Bedard! -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 58.172.122.67
