BALTIMORE - Leo Mazzone was fired as pitching coach of the Baltimore Orioles
yesterday, less than two weeks after completing his second season with a
struggling staff.
Mazzone worked wonders with the Atlanta Braves from June 1990 through the end
of the 2005 season but could not duplicate that success with the Orioles.
Baltimore ranked 29th among 30 teams with a 5.17 ERA and yielded more walks
(696) than any major league club.
"I spoke with Leo today and told him I appreciated his efforts here," Orioles
manager Dave Trembley said. "Moving forward, I felt that we would be better
served with someone else working with our young staff and that it was in his
best interests and our best interests to give him an opportunity to look
elsewhere now."
Mazzone, who turns 59 on Tuesday, had one year left on the three-year
contract he signed before the 2006 season. He was lured from Atlanta by
then-Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo, a longtime friend who was fired on June 18.
REDS: Dusty Baker has interviewed with Cincinnati for its vacant managing
job, according to a person within the organization familiar with the search.
Baker was out of baseball last season, but is eager to get back into
managing. In an interview with The Associated Press over the summer, he said
he would wait for "the right spot" in picking his next job.
The Reds are coming off their seventh straight losing season, their longest
such slump in a half-century, and are looking to develop stability in an
organization that has had two owners, three general managers and four
managers since 2003.
PADRES: Closer Trevor Hoffman, the all-time saves leader who blew his last
two chances of the regular season to cost San Diego the wild card, had
arthroscopic surgery to remove a few small bone chips from his right elbow.
He's expected to be ready by spring training.
BREWERS: Lefthander Chris Capuano, who was 0-12 with a 6.08 ERA after a 5-0
start this season, had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.
Capuano is to begin his rehabilitation Monday in Phoenix and is expected to
be ready for spring training.
NATIONALS: Righthander Shawn Hill had surgery on his non-throwing shoulder,
completing the pair of procedures needed for him to return as the potential
ace of the Washington staff next season.
