[外電] O's unlikely to offer arbitration

Outgoing free agents wouldn't yield Draft-pick compensation
There's one more deadline before the Winter Meetings begin Monday in Nashville,
Tenn., but it's a rule that won't likely affect the way the Orioles go about
their business. All Major League clubs have until 11:59 p.m. ET on Saturday to
offer arbitration to their outgoing free agents, a procedural rule that
determines which clubs may be eligible for Draft-pick compensation.
Baltimore isn't likely to take advantage of that opportunity, mostly because
the team's free agents weren't ranked high enough to receive compensation
anyway. Jaret Wright, Kris Benson, Paul Bako and Corey Patterson have all filed
for free agency, but none of the four was ranked as either Type A or Type B
free agents by the Elias Sports Bureau.
In other words, the only reason the Orioles would offer any of those players
arbitration is in the hopes that they'd accept it and return next year.
Patterson and Bako are possible fits under that guideline, but Baltimore seems
content to let both leave as free agents. If the O's offered Patterson
arbitration, he'd be in line for a lucrative one-year payday.
Wright and Benson are both out of the mix, largely because injuries kept them
from the mound last season. Wright made just three appearances before being
shut down with shoulder pain, and Benson had shoulder surgery before the year
even started. Both veterans will look to sign contracts with low base salaries
and healthy incentive clauses.
The Orioles could bring Bako back as their backup catcher, but they'll likely
sort through the market for other candidates. Even if Baltimore doesn't offer
arbitration to its free agents, it can still negotiate new contracts with them.
That especially applies to Patterson, a ball-hawking outfielder who will leave
a gaping defensive hole if he departs via free agency.
Veterans Jay Payton and Tike Redman are still under contract, but Baltimore may
not be comfortable with either one as a starting center fielder. Patterson, who
was acquired for two low-level prospects before the 2006 season, played in 267
games for the Orioles over the last two seasons and stole 82 bases while only
getting caught 18 times.
It's his offense -- a .258 career batting average with a .298 on-base
percentage -- that makes him expendable, but Patterson batted .313 last year
after the All-Star break before missing virtually all of September with a
sprained ankle.
Baltimore acquired Wright and Benson to lend a veteran presence to its young
starting rotation, an investment that resulted in mentoring from the disabled
list. Benson delivered a healthy performance in 2006, but his injury at the
start of Spring Training forced the Orioles to sign fellow veteran Steve
Trachsel as a last-minute insurance policy.
Benson's contract held a team option for next season, but the Orioles elected
not to trigger that clause. Wright, meanwhile, was released on Oct. 1, allowing
the veteran to get a jump on finding a new team before free agency.
