[外電] O's confident in pitching staff

Team has collection of young arms ready to contribute
Uncertainty may be a major part of the equation regarding next season's
pitching staff, but Orioles manager Dave Trembley is comfortable with many of
the options at his disposal.
The Orioles have virtually all of their starters returning to the fold, and
they added a trio of intriguing young pitchers in last week's Miguel Tejada
trade.
Trembley cautions that the work isn't done yet, but he'll also admit that he
likes the team's current inventory.
"We've got some guys, and we'll see in Spring Training where they're going to
fit," he said when reached Wednesday morning at his home in Daytona Beach, Fla.
"There should be competition, [but] the point was getting quality Major League
arms. I'm hoping guys like [James] Hoey, [Radhames] Liz and [Garrett] Olson
come back somewhat better than we saw."
Baltimore shed several veterans this winter, allowing Jaret Wright and Kris
Benson to test free agency and pushing Victor Zambrano and Victor Santos out of
the organization shortly after they arrived. Those decisions were made easier
by the team's cache of high-caliber arms, which includes Erik Bedard, Adam
Loewen, Jeremy Guthrie and Daniel Cabrera.
Even if Bedard winds up in a trade -- which has been one of the hottest rumors
of the Hot Stove season -- Baltimore has Olson and Hayden Penn ready to compete
for a back-end slot. The Orioles can also include Troy Patton and Matt Albers
in that mix, allowing the two former Astros to state their case during their
initial evaluations in Spring Training.
Trembley said that Patton, the jewel of the Tejada deal, has the best chance to
step into the rotation. But he also said that he won't go out of his way to
rush him and that Albers will likely cement a spot somewhere on the staff.
"We'll see what our needs are in Spring Training, but if he's ready to pitch in
the big leagues, let's put him in there," Trembley said of Patton. "He's got a
shot, but there are a lot of guys that have a shot. We've still got Olson and
Penn. I don't know what we're going to do with [Brian] Burres yet, and
obviously I'd still like to get another left-hander in the bullpen."
Trembley also said that he spoke to Albers recently and granted the youngster
permission to pitch winter ball, an endeavor that could give the right-hander
more experience against high-level bats and more chances to pitch as a
reliever.
"He asked permission to go down to Mexico, and he's pitching down in
Hermosillo," Trembley said of Albers, who posted a 4-11 record with a 5.86 ERA
for Houston last year. "He's a guy that can go either way -- he can be a long
guy or a back-of-the-rotation starter. I'm not quite sure where he's going to
fit yet, but he'll be somewhere on that stuff."
As for the third arm in the trade, reliever Dennis Sarfate, Trembley said he
has the ability to pitch late in the game.
