[外電] Trembley trying to take care of bullpen

Relievers need rest after working six innings in Friday's loss
Nobody would blame manager Dave Trembley if he was secretly rooting for a
rainout, which would buy him a chance to rest his bullpen. The Orioles played
13 innings on Friday night and couldn't practice on the field on Saturday
because of the weather, but Trembley made it clear in the pregame hours that he
wants his team to play.
Trembley will only have to stay away from one of his relievers, and that's
right-hander Matt Albers, who threw three innings in relief on Friday night.
Trembley said that Albers is a candidate to fill Tuesday's vacant rotation
slot, and also said that erstwhile starter Steve Trachsel will take a spot in
the bullpen as a long reliever for Saturday's game.
"Obviously, there's guys I'll stay away from tonight in the bullpen," Trembley
said. "The scene will dictate who I use and who I don't use, depending on if
we're winning or losing. ... But really, it's going to come down to [Garrett]
Olson starting.
"And after last night's game, what you need is to stay away from the big inning
early and hopefully put some runs on the board early. If we put some runs on
the board early, I think that will jump-start us."
Trembley used both of his late-inning arms -- rookie Jim Johnson and closer
George Sherrill -- for an inning each on Friday night. Situational relievers
Chad Bradford and Jamie Walker both pitched short stints as well. In fact, the
only relief options who didn't get in the game were long man Lance Cormier,
Trachsel and power arm Dennis Sarfate.
All seven of those arms are available on Saturday, and Trembley said that it
would take some truly extenuating circumstances for the team to make a roster
move and add another reliever for Sunday's third act against Boston.
"We had a day off before. That's a factor where we get a little help," he said.
"If we had a repeat performance tonight as we did last night and had to use so
many guys and go extra innings, then I'd think we'd have to do something."
Johnson, who spent the vast majority of his career as a starter, is only
beginning to adjust to the bullpen. And he's been so effective this season that
Trembley finds himself limiting the right-hander's appearances and increasing
the difficulty level of each individual situation he faces. For now Johnson can
expect to be used in close and late situations.
"I've used him a lot, number one," said Trembley. "Number two, this is a new
situation for him. Number three, the guy's been so darned good. I don't want to
overextend the young man, because we still haven't gotten to the halfway point
of the season. Knock on wood, the guy's been incredible in his ability to
bounce back.
"I really don't want to use him, if at all possible, for more than one inning."
Trachsel, meanwhile, is in a more perilous position. Trembley had said all
along that the veteran would pitch when he needed a fifth starter, but now he
has an opening on Tuesday and is considering other options. Trachsel has only
pitched out of the bullpen once in his career, and Trembley remains unconvinced
that he can help in that capacity.
"If I wouldn't have used Albers last night, Trachsel wouldn't be in the
bullpen tonight," he said. "I think you've got to have two long guys. If you
don't, you're in trouble. And you don't just need a long guy for the sake of
the game. Something could happen. A guy hits the ball in the first inning and
hits it off [the pitcher's] foot, he's done. If there's a rain delay for an
hour and a half, he's done. And then you've used one long guy early. What
happens if the thing goes extra innings?"
