Sidearmer who allowed milestone disappointed with himself
A day after serving up Manny Ramirez's historic 500th home run, Orioles
right-hander Chad Bradford appeared indifferent about the fact that he is
permanently linked to the dreadlocked slugger.
"You can't change it, can you?" Bradford asked Sunday. "I don't eat up giving
up home runs. I don't eat that up at all."
Bradford left Camden Yards before talking to reporters Saturday night. Bradford
replaced Jamie Walker after David Ortiz's sacrifice fly had broken a 3-3 tie,
and Ramirez hit his first submarine offering into the right-center-field seats
to become the 24th player in Major League history to reach the 500-homer
plateau.
On Sunday morning, the veteran reliever didn't mince words about his place in
baseball's annals.
"Bad pitch, [Ramirez] hit a home run," said Bradford, adding that he hadn't
watched replays of the event.
A pitch that was intended to be down and away was waist-high and an elevated in
the strike zone to the right-handed hitter. As soon as Ramirez hit it, Bradford
knew it was destined to leave the ballpark.
"Gone, way gone," he said.
That Bradford was the victim of Ramirez's milestone shot was an oddity in
itself. Entering this season, the sidewinder had surrendered only three home
runs in the previous three seasons. Ramirez's was the second off Bradford in
17 1/3 innings in 2008.
"I'm just trying to get an out," he said. "I'm not thinking about what number
[Ramirez is sitting on]. It just didn't work out."
Bradford becomes the third Orioles pitcher to to allow an opposing player's
500th home run, joining
Stu Miller (who gave up Mickey Mantle's on May 14, 1967) and
Mike Cuellar (who surrendered Harmon Killebrew's on Aug. 10, 1971).
