Good news for Johnson, but '08 over
Shoulder discomfort ends season, but no major damage
By Spencer Fordin / MLB.com
BALTIMORE -- The Orioles have received the results of the magnetic resonance
imaging tests on Jim Johnson's injured right shoulder, and the initial
returns appear to be promising. Johnson was told Saturday that he has no
major structural damage in the joint, but the rest-and-recovery period
associated with the ailment will likely end his season.
"It's wear and tear, inflammation, little stuff here and there," he said.
"But [there's] inflammation, fluid and stuff. The doctors and the trainers
were telling me that it's just something that's going to take a couple weeks
of treatment and recovery."
Johnson, who has posted a 2-4 record with a 2.23 ERA as a late reliever for
the Orioles, said that he was ambivalent about the test results. He's happy
that it's not something serious, but upset that he won't pitch again soon.
"I think it's a little bit of both," he said before Saturday's postponement.
"It's definitely disappointing to not finish the season healthy, but it's
good news that it's not something that's serious. I guess you take the good
news with the bad."
Johnson started for most of his Minor League career and there has been talk
that he could return to that role next season, a subject he refused to
speculate on Saturday. Johnson said he doesn't mind which role he fills with
the Orioles, but he admitted that he had gotten comfortable in relief during
his transitional rookie season.
"The season technically isn't over, but personally, it's a different role
than I've ever thrown in before," he said. "I guess it's a big positive to
kind of get a foothold, I think, and I'm optimistic going into next year."
