Baltimore reliever Jamie Walker was fined an undisclosed amount for critical
comments made regarding umpire Angel Hernandez following the Orioles' game
with the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night.
In that game, the left-handed Walker was called for a balk in the seventh
inning, helping set up Kendry Morales' two-run double -- the difference in
the Angels' 7-5 victory.
"I don't know if he had money betting on the game or what, but that's a
[terrible] call," Walker had said of Hernandez following the game. "I don't
know if the guy has something against me or what, but no way ... did I balk.
It changed the whole ... game. I may get screwed in the long run, but that's
just unacceptable."
In the short run, Walker got a bill from Bob Watson, MLB's vice-president of
on-field operations, who called his comments "inappropriate."
"Mr. Walker's comments were an inappropriate, unnecessary attack on Umpire
Hernandez's professionalism," Watson said in announcing the undisclosed fine.
"Such comments impugning the integrity and impartiality of Angel Hernandez or
any other member of the umpiring staff will not be tolerated."
