[外電] Orioles acquire P Hill from Cubs
BALTIMORE (TICKER) —The Baltimore Orioles added a promising young arm to their
rotation Monday, acquiring lefthander Rich Hill from the Chicago Cubs for a
player to be named.
Hill, 28, struggled with his control last season after enjoying a breakthrough
2007 campaign in Chicago. The southpaw went 1-0 with a 4.12 ERA in just five
starts, issuing 18 walks in 19 2/3 innings.
But the 6-5 Hill figures to have an important role with the Orioles, who will
enter the 2009 season with just two established veterans - Jeremy Guthrie and
Mark Hendrickson - in their rotation.
Hill went 11-8 with a 3.92 ERA in 2007, his first full season as a starter in
Chicago. But the Boston native fell out of favor with Cubs manager Lou Piniella
last season, when he failed to last longer than six innings in any of his five
starts.
Following a May 2 outing in which he allowed four walks in two-thirds of an
inning, Hill was demoted to Class AAA Iowa and did not return to the majors for
the rest of the season.
Hill became expendable in Chicago this offseason after the Cubs acquired
pitcher Aaron Heilman from the Seattle Mariners. Heilman figures to compete
with Sean Marshall and Jeff Samardzija for the No. 5 spot in Chicago's rotation.
