Hill set to make first start for Orioles

KANSAS CITY -- Three rehab starts at Triple-A Norfolk convinced the Orioles
that left-hander Rich Hill is ready to take his place in the Baltimore
rotation.
Manager Dave Trembley made it official on Friday by announcing that Hill will
start on Saturday against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. The corresponding
move to accommodate Hill's spot on the roster was still in the planning
stages on Friday night as the Orioles evaluated the health of outfielders
Luke Scott and Adam Jones.
"Rich Hill will start and that's a day we're all looking forward to,"
Trembley said.
Hill, working his way back from a strained left elbow injury, went 1-1 with a
1.38 ERA in 13 1/3 innings at Norfolk. The one negative revolved around
control, as Hill walked nine over those 13 1/3 innings. But he fanned 14 and
generally looked like a pitcher who can flourish if he succeeds in getting
ahead of the hitters.
Asked what Hill needs to do to emulate his solid, consistent season with the
Cubs in 2007, when he went 11-8 with a 3.92 ERA, Trembley was quick to make
his point.
"I don't think Rich Hill is alone in that area. For any pitcher to be
consistent, it's called strike one and throw it over the plate," Trembley
said. "Command your pitches, that's the key for consistency for anyone who
pitches at this level. It sounds simple, but easier said than done."
Hill's arrival leaves veteran lefty Mark Hendrickson in a
bullpen/spot-starter role.
"From the left side, [Hendrickson] complements [Brian] Bass," Trembley said.
"You have two long guys now out of the bullpen, one right-handed and one
left-handed. You can match up with Mark in the middle of the game against
some left-handed hitters."
Trembley said his conversations with Hendrickson after he signed with the
Orioles last winter revolved around plans to use Hendrickson out of the
bullpen and as a starter when the need was there.
"I know he wants to start, but I also know that he's a pro," Trembley said.
"He has pitched for a long time and will do what's best for the team. He's
got a good attitude about it."
Pitching matchup
BAL: LHP Rich Hill (0-0, -.-- ERA)
Hill, who was placed on the disabled list on March 29, is eager to pick up
where he left off in Spring Training. With Hendrickson being sent to the
bullpen, it's an opportunity for Hill to help solidify the rotation. He went
1-0 for the Cubs in five starts last year and was 11-8 in 2007 when he
started 32 games and worked 195 innings with a 3.92 ERA.
KC: RHP Kyle Davies (2-1, 5.22 ERA)
Davies held a 3-1 lead when he was relieved in the seventh inning of his last
start on Sunday in Anaheim, but the Angels rallied to win. Davies, trying to
bounce back from a poor start, was satisfied with his outing. He felt he had
much better rhythm and tempo and avoided too much nit-picking. Davies said he
tried to throw every pitch for a strike except when he got ahead in the count
0-2 or 1-2, then tried to bounce pitches. In all, he made 95 pitches, and 58
were strikes. Davies has pitched against the Orioles twice in his career,
going 1-0 with a 10.80 ERA.
