Jake Arrieta has been pretty good for the Bowie Baysox this season, but he
put it all together on Saturday night.
The 23-year-old right-hander tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and tossed
a one-hitter as the Baysox posted a rain-shortened 4-0 victory over the Erie
SeaWolves.
It was Arrieta's first professional complete game and shutout and the third
time he's held an opponent to one hit over five or more innings.
"My mechanics were good, I threw everything for strikes and got ahead in the
count," Arrieta said of his dominant performance. "When I do all those
things, I'm going to have a pretty good day."
The former fifth-round pick didn't look dominant early on as he walked Alex
Avila and allowed a single to Deik Scram in the second inning. But Arrieta
struck out Cale Iorg and Andy Dirks to end the threat, then did not allow
another ball out of the infield.
"The biggest thing was he was spotting his fastball pretty good," Bowie
catcher Adam Donachie said. "When he does that, it's going to make his
off-speed stuff that much better."
Arrieta, who struggled with a groin injury earlier in the season, showed no
signs of slowing down. He lived on the inside corner of the plate and
consistently got ahead in the count before working in his breaking ball.
Brandon Snyder hit a two-run homer in the first, the Baysox tacked on two
runs in the fifth and Arrieta went into cruise control, fanning four of the
final six batters he faced.
The Plano, Texas, native moved into second place in the Eastern League with
42 strikeouts over 33 1/3 innings.
