2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. 19 Zachary Britton, LHP
Zach Britton, LHP
2010 Rank: NR
Drafted: 2006, 3rd (85)
ETA in Majors: 2011
Statistically speaking:
Britton is a ground-ball machine. His 2.80 groundout-to-airout ratio was
fourth highest in the Minors in 2010, and that was a bit of a dip for him.
In 2009, his 3.38 GO/AO led all Minor League pitchers, and back in 2008,
he was sixth at 2.81.
Scouting report:
Not surprisingly, Britton uses a heavy sinker to help generate all those
ground balls. He's also got a plus slider and a very good changeup in his
arsenal. He can throw them all for strikes. He's proven to be durable
(three straight 140-plus innings seasons) and he's made adjustments as
he's moved up the ladder.
Upside potential:
Nearly ready to pitch in the bigs now, he profiles at least as a very
solid No. 2 starter.
They said it: "He's a guy that's been striving to get better since the first
day I met him. He wants the ball every five days and wants to get out there
as much as he can and do well. Most guys are like that, but I think he lives
it out on the mound a little bit more than some other guys." -- Double-A
Bowie pitching coach Kennie Steenstra
He said it: "I was happy with what I did last year. There were a few areas,
looking back, where maybe I could've done a little better, but I feel I was
able to do what I wanted to do. Coming into Spring Training 2010, I wanted to
focus on my changeup and pitching with more of a game plan than just throwing
my sinker, and I felt I accomplished that."
