2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. 24 Manny Machado, SS
Manny Machado, SS
2010 Rank: NR
Drafted: 2010, 1st (3)
ETA in Majors: 2013
Statistically speaking:
He only got in 36 at-bats over nine games after signing right at the
Draft deadline, but it was impressive that he struck out just three
times in that time span. That's fewer than 42 strikeouts if extrapolated
out to a full 500-at bat season.
Scouting report:
The A-Rod comparisons are not fair and come mostly because he's a big,
somewhat toolsy shortstop from the Florida high school ranks. He may never
have Rodriguez-type power, but he should hit for average and at least some
pop. He's got the tools and actions to be a good defensive shortstop,
though some think eventually he'll get too big and will have to move to
third. He has outstanding makeup.
Upside potential:.
They said it: "He's hungry. [Machado] wants to be good. ... I've see this kid
prove himself day by day, week by week, year by year, to get better. I never
thought he would be this good." -- White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who's
known Machado since he was 10
He said it:"Yes, I would [hate to move]. You have to adjust to many things
because of the coach or the system you're in. I'm just a player. I'm out
there to have fun. If they want me to move positions, I'll just have to
adjust."" -- on the potential of having to leave shortstop in the future
