Peterson headed to Baltimore?
The Baltimore Orioles appear to be on the verge of hiring former
big league pitching coach Rick Peterson, reports Dan Connolly
of the Baltimore Sun.
Peterson reportedly has interviewed twice with the Orioles this
offseason, including meeting once with manager Buck Showalter
and pitching coach Rick Adair. Connolly said Peterson would
technically fill the Orioles' vacant minor league pitching
coordinator position, though the role will likely will be re-titled
by GM Dan Duquette and include additional responsibilities.
The 57-year-old Peterson, known for blending biomechanical research
into his work, previously served as pitching coach of the Athletics,
Mets and Brewers.

Baltimore's search for pitching
Plenty of teams are looking to add starting pitching, even if
the number of available free agents is thinning out. Among those
with a glaring need is the Baltimore Orioles, and Ken Rosenthal
of FoxSports.com says that makes the O's a "team to watch"
over the next month.
The Orioles finished last in the majors last season in starters' ERA
and the only addition in that area is Japanese free-agent
left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada.
There was a report in Friday's Baltimore Sun that the Orioles
have had multiple conversations with free agent Joe Saunders.
The Orioles would like to land Edwin Jackson, but GM Dan Duquette
is against handing out the four-year deal that Jackson is seeking.
They can likely get Saunders at shorter terms.
There also is some buzz that the Orioles and Braves haven't closed
the door on a blockbuster deal for Jair Jurrjens that would involve
Baltimore outfielder Adam Jones. A report last month said the Orioles
were against a deal involving Jones.
Rosenthal suggest Paul Maholm, who could be landed at a reasonable
cost after the southpaw went 6-14 with a 3.66 ERA for the Pirates
last season.

Several clubs eye Scott
The Baltimore Orioles non-tendered Luke Scott earlier this week
-- not surprising considering his projected salary and the fact
that he had surgery late last summer -- and several clubs showed
immediate interest in signing him, including the O's tweeted
Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.
Roch Kubatko tweets Tuesday that as many as 11 clubs are considering
Scott, and that the O's have yet to contact the player's
representatives.
There's no word who those linked teams are but Scott could make
sense on a number of American League clubs, potentially including
the Oakland Athletics, Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians,
Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays.
Scott's main competition may be the likes of Hideki Matsui,
Vladimir Guerrero, Raul Ibanez, Russell Branyan and Xavier Nady,
none of which have signed yet.
Scott's shoulder surgery isn't expected to keep him from being ready
for spring training, according to multiple reports earlier this winter
stemming from a positive visit to Dr. James Andrews for a check-up.

On the Orioles' radar
The Baltimore Orioles have been relatively quiet this offseason,
having acquired Dana Eveland from the Los Angeles Dodgers, catcher
Taylor Teagarden from the Rangers and signed both Endy Chavez and
right-hander(這邊應該寫錯了)Tsuyoshi Wada. The club continues
their focus on pitching, writes Ken Rosenthal Tuesday.
Names mentioned in the report include Joe Saunders, Paul Maholm,
Edwin Jackson and Taiwanese left-hander Chen-Wei Yin, whom the O's
have been linked to since last month.
Rosenthal notes that veterans Hiroki Kuroda and Roy Oswalt are not
likely targets for the Orioles, nor vice versa, as both are seeking
deals with contending clubs.

Jones' fate with O's
The Baltimore Orioles have options with centerfielder Adam Jones.
He's due a raise via arbitration and is two years from free agency,
but he's a valued commodity, and could bring back the starting
pitching GM Dan Duquette covets.
Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun writes Tuesday that the O's,
despite their search for another outfielder, are not set on dealing
Jones and could still extend his contract, perhaps buying out a
free agent year or two.
The Braves' apparent offer of right-hander Jair Jurrjens,
infielder/outfielder Martin Prado and a pitching prospect wasn't
enough. Connolly suggests the Orioles might be open to a deal that
includes Tommy Hanson, though they may prefer to see him pitch
first as he's coming off a shoulder injury.
The Washington Nationals are another club looking for a centerfielder,
though they sent away much of their young starting pitching depth
-- what the Orioles are believed to want in return for Jones --
when they acquired lefty Gio Gonzalez from Oakland.
A multi-year answer for Jones could be something along the lines of
what the Phillies gave Shane Victorino two years ago, plus inflation.
Something in the neighborhood of 3-4 years at $8 million per sounds
about right. Whether the Orioles want to pay that is another story.
