[Note] MLB.com 2012 Prospect Watch
Dylan Bundy
Rank: 1 ETA: 2013 Position: RHP Age: 19, DOB: 11/15/1992
Bats: S, Throws: R
Height: 6' 1", Weight: 195
Drafted: 2011, 1st (4) - BAL
While Bundy was the first high school arm taken in the 2011 Draft, after
three college pitchers, it would be a mistake to think that means he'll take
a long time to develop. Like Trevor Bauer, Bundy uses long-tossing to build
arm strength, and it seems to work for him. He's not that big, but he's
strong and athletic, utilizing a four-pitch mix extremely well. His fastball
is plus, and he maintains velocity with smooth mechanics. He has two breaking
pitches, a curve and slider, both of which are outstanding, and he also
throws a changeup. After an astonishing start at Delmarva, Bundy was bumped
up to Frederick before May ended. He was promoted again, to Double-A Bowie,
in mid-August, and earned a callup to the big leagues on September 19.
Kevin Gausman
Rank: 2 ETA: 2015 Position: RHP Age: 21, DOB: 01/06/1991
Bats: R, Throws: R
Height: 6' 4", Weight: 185
Drafted: 2012, 1st (4) - BAL
The LSU ace was the first college pitcher taken in the 2012 Draft and for
good reason. In his two years at LSU, Gausman evolved from a thrower with arm
strength to a much more polished all-around pitcher. His stuff is still
electric, with a fastball that sits at 94 mph with a good amount of movement.
He can reach back for more and has the chance to add velocity as he fills out
his projectable frame. Gausman's changeup, an above-average to plus pitch,
fades and sinks well. His breaking stuff – he’s thrown a slider and a curve
– aren’t as good as the other two, but he should be able to develop an
average breaking ball as he progresses through the Orioles system. He’ll
need to refine his command, but with a loose and easy delivery, Gausman
should be able to handle that and evolve into a future frontline starter.
Jonathan Schoop
Rank: 3 ETA: 2014 Position: 2B Age: 20, DOB: 10/16/1991
Bats: R, Throws: R Height: 6' 1", Weight: 195
Signed: Aug. 20, 2008 - BAL
The Curacao native has shown the ability to play well all over the infield.
Signed as a shortstop, he could play that premium position, but has also
spent a lot of time at second in deference to first-round pick Manny Machado.
Regardless of his position, he's shown some offensive tools and should
continue to hit for average with more power coming as he matures. He played
alongside Machado quite a bit and seeing the pair together up the middle in
Baltimore could be in the cards.
Nick Delmonico
Rank: 4 ETA: 2015 Position: 3B Age: 20, DOB: 07/12/1992
Bats: L, Throws: R Height: 6' 2", Weight: 196
Drafted: 2011, 6th (185) - BAL
The son of longtime coach Rod Delmonico and the brother of Minor Leaguer
Tony, Delmonico has baseball in his blood. He also, as a result of growing up
around the game, has a very high baseball IQ. That’s clear when he’s
hitting, with a very good approach from the left side of the plate. He’s
more of a hitter now, but he has the chance to develop average power,
especially given the loft in his swing. A below-average runner, Delmonico had
largely played the infield in high school, and after catching in his senior
year, he’s back on the right side of the infield, where his arm and hands
play just fine. In the end, though, it will be his bat that will carry him up
the ladder. Delmonico had a decent showing in his first season of pro ball
until a knee injury put him on the disabled list for a week of July and most
of August.
Xavier Avery
Rank: 5 ETA: 2012 Position: OF Age: 22, DOB: 01/01/1990
Bats: L, Throws: L Height: 6' 0", Weight: 190
Drafted: 2008, 2nd (50) - BAL
Avery has the tools to be a top-of-the-order catalyst some day. His plus
speed should allow him to continue to be a basestealer and be an
above-average defensive center fielder. He can swing the bat from the left
side of the plate but gets into trouble with his plate discipline and
approach, leading to inflated strikeout totals. He worked on that in the
Arizona Fall League in 2011 and had some success, a springboard into the 2012
season, during which the Orioles’ future leadoff hitter made his Major
League debut and spent time in the big leagues on four separate occasions.
Glynn Davis
Rank: 6 ETA: 2015 Position: OF Age: 20, DOB: 12/07/1991
Bats: R, Throws: R Height: 6' 3", Weight: 170
Signed: Aug. 20, 2010 - BAL
Davis has the chance to be the local kid who made it on his hometown team.
Born in Baltimore, the Orioles’ scouting staff did a fine job of signing
Davis as an undrafted free agent out of nearby Catonsville Community College.
A shortstop there, he’s now a center fielder and the fastest player in the
organization. While still without polish, Davis does have some idea at the
plate and he’ll have to continue to understand what his role is. If it all
comes together, he has the chance to be a top-of-the-order catalyst who uses
his plus speed to patrol center field in Camden Yards in front of family and
friends. Davis started the 2012 season with Class A Delmarva and bounced
between the Shorebirds and Class A Advanced Frederick in July and August.
Jason Esposito
Rank: 7 ETA: 2014 Position: 3B Age: 22, DOB: 07/19/1990
Bats: R, Throws: R Height: 6' 2", Weight: 200
Drafted: 2011, 2nd (64) - BAL
An everyday third baseman from a very good Vanderbilt program, Esposito
brings a good glove, some pop in his bat and very good baseball instincts to
the Orioles’ organization. He’s a good defender at the hot corner, with
enough arm as well as hands. He has some power and will square up some balls,
but there has been concern about his ability to hit consistently with a
slightly choppy swing. He’s a good baserunner, but it’s not likely to be a
huge part of his game going forward. If the swing comes together and he hits
enough, he could be a very solid third baseman at the big league level.
Parker Bridwell
Rank: 8 ETA: 2015 Position: RHP Age: 21, DOB: 08/02/1991
Bats: R, Throws: R Height: 6' 4", Weight: 190
Drafted: 2010, 9th (268) - BAL
A three-sport standout in high school, Bridwell is exactly the kind of
athletic and projectable pitcher teams love to develop. He throws a heavy
fastball with a lot of sink, sometimes up into the mid-90s range. He has the
makings of an above-average or better power breaking ball, and he’s working
on his changeup. He’s still fairly raw and like with many young pitchers, he
needs to improve his command in order to succeed long term. If the Orioles
are patient, though, the dividend could be huge.
Tim Berry
Rank: 9 ETA: 2014 Position: LHP Age: 21, DOB: 03/18/1991
Bats: L, Throws: L Height: 6' 3", Weight: 180
Drafted: '09, 50th (1,496) - BAL
Berry needed Tommy John surgery right after signing and has slowly made his
way back to being the kind of pitching prospect many thought he could be
before he got hurt in high school. He has the chance to have a good
three-pitch mix with a potentially plus fastball and curve to go along with a
deceptive changeup. After starting the season with a repeat in Delmarva,
Berry was moved up to Frederick as he starts reaching his upside.
Branden Kline
Rank: 10 ETA: 2015 Position: RHP Age: 21, DOB: 09/29/1991
Bats: R, Throws: R Height: 6' 3", Weight: 195
Drafted: 2012, 2nd (65) - BAL
Kline could be a terrific local boy done good story. Growing up in Maryland
with parents who are Orioles fans, he has a chance to pitch for his hometown
team. Kline pitched in a variety of roles at the University of Virginia,
closing in 2011 and starting in 2012. The right-hander has a projectable
frame that reminds some of Brandon Morrow, with a live arm and clean
delivery. He’ll throw his fastball consistently in the low-90s, and there
might be more velocity to come in the future. Kline has confidence in his
hard curve, which he is willing to throw at any point in the count. He should
have decent command and could end up being a solid No. 3 type starter. He
also has the mentality to pitch in short relief, where his power stuff might
play up, and he could get to Baltimore more quickly.
Eduardo Rodriguez
Rank: 11 ETA: 2015 Position: LHP Age: 19, DOB: 04/07/1993
Bats: L, Throws: L Height: 6' 2", Weight: 175
Drafted: 2008, 3rd (81) - BAL
A touch-and-feel lefty, Rodriguez pitched very well in the Gulf Coast League
in 2011, showing a good feel for pitching and pretty good command for his
age. Though his strikeout rate declined, he adjusted fine to full season ball
with Class A Delmarva in 2012. Rodriguez doesn’t have plus stuff, but he can
get his fastball into the low-90s with good movement down in the zone. He has
a pretty good breaking ball and a solid changeup. His ceiling might be
limited, but he has the makings of a solid starting pitcher.
L.J. Hoes Rank: 12 ETA: 2013 Position: OF Age: 22, DOB: 03/05/1990
Bats: R, Throws: R Height: 6' 0", Weight: 190
Drafted: 2008, 3rd (81) - BAL
Hoes has shown an ability to hit for average at various stops in the Orioles’
system and he hit even better in Triple-A, when he got there at the
beginning of June, than he did in Double-A to start the year. Hoes has shown
some more extra-base power, which could bode well as he transitions into a
full-time corner outfielder. He runs fairly well to steal a few bases and
patrol the outfield, but it’s his bat that will determine if he’s an
everyday guy or a utility man in the future. Hoes got his first callup to the
Majors in September.
Clayton Schrader
Rank: 13 ETA: 2013 Position: RHP Age: 22, DOB: 04/28/1990
Bats: L, Throws: R Height: 5' 11", Weight: 200
Drafted: 2010, 10th (298) - BAL
In his first full season, Schrader pitched across two levels and struck out a
whopping 14.3 per nine innings and allowed just 3.7 hits per nine. He also
walked 6.3, pointing to one of the bigger issues facing him as he moves up:
his command. He managed to get the walks down and keep striking out more than
13 per nine innings with Class A Advanced Frederick to start 2012, but his
command reemerged as an issue after a late June promotion to Double-A Bowie.
With a plus fastball and curve, Schrader has the pure stuff to be successful
in the back end of a bullpen, if he can throw enough strikes and stay healthy.
Michael Belfiore
Rank: 14 ETA: 2013 Position: LHP Age: 24, DOB: 10/03/1988
Bats: R, Throws: L Height: 6' 2", Weight: 220
Drafted: 2009, 1st (45) - ARI
The Boston College lefty originally taken by the D-backs was sent to the
Orioles to complete the Josh Bell trade. He started for the first part of his
pro career but had made the transition to the bullpen in June of 2011, and he
’s taken to it, where his fastball and changeup can play up. The Orioles
moved him up to Double-A after getting the southpaw and he’s handled the
jump extremely well.
Joe Mahoney
Rank: 15 ETA: 2013 Position: 1B Age: 25, DOB: 02/01/1987
Bats: L, Throws: L Height: 6' 6", Weight: 240
Drafted: 2007, 6th (189) - BAL
The big first baseman had a bit of a breakout 2010 season but was hampered by
a quad strain in 2011. He didn’t quite rebound to his previous heights in
2012, but he hit well enough to earn two very brief callups to the Majors in
July and August. There’s more power to be had, and Mahoney will have to tap
into it if he wants to be an everyday first baseman at the big league level.
Tyler Townsend
Rank: 16 ETA: 2014 Position: 1B Age: 24, DOB: 05/14/1988
Bats: L, Throws: R Height: 6' 3", Weight: 215
Drafted: 2009, 3rd (85) - BAL
When he’s played, Townsend has hit, showing the ability to hit for average
and power. But the first baseman hasn’t been able to get more than a taste
of Double-A ball or collect more than 300 at-bats in any of his first three
full seasons of pro ball because of hamstring issues. If he can stay on the
field, he could become one of the better pure hitting prospects in the
system, but Townsend's 2012 season was again slowed by injuries. A hamstring
injury kept him off the field for most of May and June and he was placed on
the disabled list again in mid-August with a wrist injury.
Mike Wright
Rank: 17 ETA: 2014 Position: RHP Age: 22, DOB: 01/03/1990
Bats: R, Throws: R Height: 6' 5", Weight: 195
Drafted: 2011, 3rd (94) - BAL
The big right-hander out of East Carolina features a heavy fastball in the
low 90s that he commands well to generate groundouts. Wright uses a slider
along with the sinker effectively and has shown a good feel for a changeup.
He goes right after hitters and has the kind of stuff that would work in the
bullpen just fine if that third pitch doesn’t come along. He could move up
in a hurry if that’s the case, but it’s too early to give up on him as a
starter. Wright quickly jumped to Double-A, joining the Bowie Baysox on May
25th. A hamstring injury landed him on the disabled list in early June, but
he returned to action after missing a little over a month of the season.
Oliver Drake
Rank: 18 ETA: 2013 Position: RHP Age: 25, DOB: 01/13/1987
Bats: R, Throws: R Height: 6' 4", Weight: 215
Drafted: '08, 43rd (1286) - BAL
After two horrific starts in Double-A to start the year in 2011, Drake went
back down to the Carolina League and righted the ship. He earned a ticket
back up to Bowie and finished off his year with a 2.78 ERA over his final six
starts. Unfortunately, after just three Double-A starts in 2012, he was
sidelined with shoulder soreness. Drake generates a lot of ground balls, and
if his secondary stuff can come along and he can stay healthy, he could be a
workhorse type in the back of a rotation.
Robert Bundy
Rank: 19 ETA: 2013 Position: RHP Age: 22, DOB: 01/13/1990
Bats: R, Throws: R Height: 6' 2", Weight: 215
Drafted: 2008, 8th (236) - BAL
No, he’s not on this list because his younger brother is near the top of it.
The elder Bundy pitched his way here, particularly with a very strong showing
in the Carolina League in 2011. There he used a good fastball in the low-90s
with plenty of sink to generate groundouts. He complements it with a very
good breaking ball and he goes right after hitters. His changeup is still a
work in progress and he’ll need to improve it as he moves up, perhaps a
reason why he struggled when he got promoted to Double-A. He may not have the
ceiling of little bro, but he could be pitching in the same rotation as him
in a couple of years. He placed on the disabled list in late May with an
ankle sprain. He returned to Double-A Bowie on June 6. Bundy was placed on
the DL again on July 9, with elbow soreness.
Adrian Marin
Rank: 20 ETA: 2016 Position: SS Age: 18, DOB: 03/08/1994
Bats: R, Throws: R Height: 6' 0", Weight: 165
Drafted: 2012, 3rd (99) - BAL
Marin was seen as a decent high school prospect heading into his senior year
of high school when he took Joey Gallo deep at the National High School
Invitational at the USA Baseball complex in March. That allowed him to climb
into the third round and the Orioles were able to keep him from attending the
University of Miami. A solid defender at short with good speed, Marin has a
decent feel for the game and good instincts. He had a solid summer debut that
included a brief stop with full-season Delmarva. If he can improve his
approach at the plate and on-base skills, he could be a future
top-of-the-order type hitter.
