[新聞] Let the rebuilding begin with that guy full of potential
From Orlando Sentinel

It might take one month or one road trip, one season or one
game, one lifetime or one trip down the court.
When Dwight Howard will become a player is unknown. The
Orlando Magic trust that he will become one. It's the correct
assumption. After all the debating, the Magic did what was
necessary.
They chose to rebuild.
Simmer down, OK? I loved Emeka Okafor, too. But time has
stopped in Orlando. The Magic are on pause now. They are
rebooting the system. It's the only way to build a strong
team post-Tracy McGrady. And since they aren't looking at a
clock, Howard makes the most sense.
So the future is the future. Forget all this talk about
rebuilding quickly and jumping right back into contention.
It won't happen. The Magic are too competitive to concede
the notion, but they realize it is a possibility.
Howard is the No. 1 pick, and we must be patient with him.
Unless the Magic pillage a team in this imminent McGrady
trade, they won't make the playoffs next season. In fact,
they shouldn't make the playoffs, to be honest.
It's time to get this thing right. I have serious doubts
about whether the Magic can do this, but they deserve a
chance. Ultimately, we have to give them a chance because
McGrady will leave -- little can change that -- and the
Magic won't discontinue play after he departs.
Howard is worthy of our intrigue. LeBron James should be
considered the most amazing prospect ever to hop from high
school to the pros. Kevin Garnett should be a close second.
After those two, Howard merits consideration for third, even
ahead of Kobe Bryant and McGrady.
This guy will not fail. With him, it's a when-question, not
an if-question. Disregard all the unoriginal blabber people
use whenever any talented prep dares go to the NBA. Howard
will not fail.
He is no Kwame Brown. He is an athlete with a basketball IQ,
with a feel for the game. One day, he might lead the Magic
in points, rebounds, assists and blocks. He can be that good
-- if the Magic can develop him.
"I'm always leery of a kid who's dominant at his level based
on athleticism and physical talent," Magic General Manager
John Weisbrod said. "This kid is big and strong and athletic.
The big difference is his basketball IQ is off the charts."
Superstar-less, or at least headed in that direction,
Weisbrod had to make this decision. On a much smaller scale,
the Howard-Okafor debate resembled those James-or-Carmelo
Anthony whispers last year.
Reasonable thinkers believed James was a surefire Hall of
Famer, Anthony a surefire perennial all-star. Easy choice.
Howard has more developing left than James does, but he has
Hall of Fame talent. Okafor has the talent of a perennial
all-star.
"I'm just a regular guy," Okafor said before the draft.
In his words, Howard is just a Kevin Garnett-Tim Duncan
mixture who's about to be the greatest player ever. He
shouldn't have said so little. Why couldn't he foresee
himself turning water to wine, or eliminating I-4 traffic,
or building the Magic a new arena dunk by dunk?
"I want to be the greatest player ever at the end of my
career," Howard said, a sentence he first uttered to
Weisbrod.
Maybe this time, the Magic can keep a star around longer
than four years.
Assuming Howard becomes a star within four years.
He will. Just ask him.
ESPN aired a promo for the prep-to-pros candidates. It asked,
"Who are you?"
Howard answered for the group. "We are the NBA's future," he
said.
He is the Magic's future. Grab a magazine and wait. Another
rebuilding period has begun with promise.
