轉自 http://magic.realgm.com by Cory Jellicoe - September 25, 2004 魔術隊 2004~2005 季前分析 With General Manager Weisbrod revamping almost the entire roster, the presence of "defense" and "team" is very evident. History tells us that defense wins NBA Championships, and that is what the Magic have focused on this off-season. After having a dismal 21-61 record, the Orlando Magic prepared for a complete turnaround in 04-05, and started off with a flurry of trades and key signings. The one that needed to be done was the trade of Tracy McGrady - the best scorer in the league for the past two seasons, and probably many more. In return, they got three players that have played alongside eachother for the past five years. Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato are great players and are very unique in different aspects of the game. Then, there was the trade of Drew Gooden for Tony Battie. Weisbrod then signed Hedo Turkoglu, Stacey Augmon, DeShawn Stevenson, and drafted Dwight Howard and Jameer Nelson. Only Pat Garrity, Andrew DeClercq, Grant Hill and Keith Bogans were left from the original 2003-04 roster. I will go through each players projected stats and key attributes. STARTERS Center - Kelvin Cato. Kelvin brings size and a defensive presence in the middle-two things Orlando lacked last season. Kelvin can block shots, rebound and do the dirty work under the boards. Having Francis and Mobley alongside him helps as they know where he likes the ball. Mins-25, Rebs-7, Blks-1.8, Pts-8 Power Forward - Dwight Howard. Like most rookies out of highschool, Dwight has alot to prove. He has so much potential and will be one of the keys to Orlando success this season. With Francis likely to face many double teams, Dwight will be relied upon to be the 2nd or 3rd scoring option on most nights. Mins-30, Rebs-8, Blks-1.3, Pts-11 Small Forward - Grant Hill. Grant will also be a key this season, and if coach Davis can utilise Grant effectively, then his ankles should be able to hold up throughout the season. But thats why Turkoglu and Augmon were signed-incase Hill goes down again. His pass 1st, shoot 2nd mentality will reap benefits for Francis and Mobley-as they both love to score points. If Grant is healthy, Orlando will have great success. Mins-20, Rebs-5, Asts-5, Pts-12 Shooting Guard - Cuttino Mobley. Cuttino will score alot of points now that he no longer plays with a dominant center. Mobley has a great opportunity to flourish in Orlando, and his ability to hit threes and open shots will be dependant on whether teams double Dwight and Francis. Cuttino is a good defender and also plays well in the open break. Mins-30, Rebs-3, Asts-3, Pts-19 Point Guard - Steve Francis. Steve is a warrior and has a desire to win. He competes hard every game, and brings out the best of those around him. Francis could possibly be the best PG in the East now that Baron Davis is in the West. A backcourt of Francis, Mobley and Hill will be very potent and any three players can take control of the game when needed. Francis has the opportunity to lead Orlando to the playoffs and has a great cast to support him. Mins-35, Rebs-6, Asts-6, Pts-20 BENCH Hedo Turkoglu is a great signing and could possibly start at small forward, depending on Hills health. Hedo can hit threes, open jumpers, create off the dribble and play defense. He has the ability to score 20 points on any given night and could be the 6th man of the year. Hedu gives Orlando another scoring option and other teams headaches. Mins-20, Rebs-4, Asts-3, Pts-13 Tony Battie is a tough nosed defender that fills the middle and plays hard. Whether he plays 5 or 25 minutes, he competes every night. Tony can block shots, alter the oppositions offense, grab rebounds and secure loose balls. Tony is a capable starter if needed. Mins-20, Rebs-8, Blks-1.8, Pts-8 If healthy, Pat Garrity will be a key contributor to Orlando's success as well. Pat can hit the three often, and should benefit from double teams on Francis, Mobley and Dwight. Pat is also a rugged player under the boards, and a good presense in the lane. Mins-15, Rebs-5, Asts-1, Pts-8 Keith Bogans had an oustanding summer league and could be a great scoring option off the bench. He can also start at the 2 or 3 spot if needed, and is a soild perimeter defender. Keith has a good shot selection and can hit the three pointer. Mins-15, Rebs-3, Asts-2, Pts-8 Jameer Nelson will be backing up Francis, so minutes could be far and few. But when given the opportunity to play, Nelson could turn heads. He is tough for a little guy, passes well and defends well. If Francis goes down with an injury, Nelson should get the starting nod. Mins-13, Rebs-2, Asts-3, Pts-5 Stacey Augmon was a key signing because of his experience and defensive abilities, and is added insurance if Hill goes down. Stacey will more likely be a leader in the locker room and mentor to the younger players like Dwight, Jameer and Bogans. Stacey has the ability to finish the break, slow down a scoring threat and knows what it takes to finish games. Stacey also proved that he can still play 30 minutes at age 36, as he started 24 games last season with the Hornets. He will back up Hill, Mobley, Turkoglu and Bogans. Mins-15, Rebs-2, Asts-1, Pts-5 Andrew DeClercq will back up Cato, Howard, Battie and Garrity, so minutes could be few. But if needed, DeClercq can grab rebounds and chase loose balls. Another solid presense in the middle that can give you 10 points and 10 rebounds every now and then. Mins-10, Rebs-3, Blks-1, Pts-4 DeShawn Stevenson will probably play limited minutes this season with the logjam at the 2 and 3 spots, but is capable of scoring points in a hurry. If needed, he can start or play as a 6th man for offensive skills.
