J.J. Redick Interview
Videogames, the Magic, and talking trash.
by Jon Robinson
August 11, 2006 - I thought he had a bad back.
That's all I could think when I heard J.J. Redick was going to be in the Bay
doing motion-capture for 2K Sports. I could already imagine the headlines:
Rookie out for season due to videogame injury.
Then again, with the image portrayed in the media, I almost expected Redick
to get booed when he walked in the room, mo-cap suit so loose he needed a
Velcro belt so his pants didn't end up around his kicks as he dribbled past
me.
He stopped to sign the mo-cap wall of fame, next to the names Urlacher,
Giambi, Shaq. Redick paused for a moment, then laughed as he scribbled J.J.
Redick 4 or 7, signaling the change from the digit he made famous as a Blue
Devil to his lucky new number in Orlando
Redick took a few shots and admitted this was the first time he's been on a
court for almost two months, but he wasn't going to miss this.
"I play videogames all the time, probably too much," he tells me, and there
are plenty of moves he wants to help add into the game, but this isn't just
any game, College Hoops 2K7 features Redick on the cover. This is his game.
These are his moves. The tear drop. The baby hook. The pump fake step through. "As someone who is always on his 360, there are moves I want to see done right, so anything I could do to help, I'm going to do it."
Redick set up for his signature free throw routine, something that will be
featured in NBA 2K7: Spin, bounce, spin, bounce, spin, shoot…miss. "That's
why you're getting an 87 free throw rating," one of the producers jokes from
the sidelines.
"Dude, c'mon," Redick laughs, then goes through his routine a second time.
Swish. Actually, there was no net on the hoop, so the perfect shot was
actually one of silence.
"I haven't shot on a rim without a net since I was in junior high."
I watched Redick shoot from close-up, falling away, leaning in, jumping,
standing still, only thing that remained the same was the mesmerizing ball
rotation.
And the silence of perfection.
IGN Sports: You say you're a videogame addict. When did the addiction begin?
J.J. Redick: I played videogames growing up, but my parents really monitored
how much I was playing. I had the Game Gear and the Sega Genesis and the
PlayStation, then I got the PlayStation 2 my freshman year in college. I got
it a little later than everyone else, but once I got it, that's all I did. I
was an addict. I got the Xbox, now I have the 360. I love shooting games.
Halo, Ghost Recon…I love Hitman for 360. I also play every sports game that
comes out, but I'm more into the action, the shooters.
IGN Sports: How closely do you pay attention to how you're rated in the
basketball games?
J.J. Redick: I look at them, I definitely do. I can't lie. It's just someone's
opinion, so you can't get too mad. I couldn't believe the first time I was in
a videogame, it was the coolest thing. Unfortunately, I was 6-4, black with
braids in the game. I'm dead serious…but it's no big deal. [laughs]
IGN Sports: Adam Morrison told me that the ratings are so important, people
talk trash about each other's numbers at practice.
J.J. Redick: [laughs] Morrison tries to talk trash about everything.
IGN Sports: People like to label you "Best Shooter in America". Does that mean
your character is going to be the best shooter in NBA 2K7?
J.J. Redick: I hope they make me a good shooter. I was playing NBA 2K7 a little
earlier and I ended up with about 20 in short quarters. I struggled a little
bit from the three point line, so they might have to adjust that a little bit.
Maybe it was just me. I'm not that good at basketball games.
IGN Sports: Do you play a lot on Xbox Live?
J.J. Redick: Oh yeah, I play Tiger online, Halo, some of the basketball games.
People are always talking trash to me online because I'm terrible at the
basketball games. Basketball is like the one game I can't figure out when it
comes to videogames. I used to be good at Lakers vs. Celtics, but I can't
shoot at all on the 360.
IGN Sports: You said your parents monitored your gaming growing up, did it
ever distract you from practicing your jumper?
J.J. Redick: I always wanted to practice no matter what. I was always a
realist. I never liked playing on a goal unless it was ten feet. I never
liked shooting with the mini-balls. Even when I was 8-9, I always wanted to
shoot on the real goals and get better. The only thing that ever distracted
me from doing as much basketball as I wanted to was school, and now that I'm
done with school, I basically have no distractions.
IGN Sports: I know you wrote a lot of poetry when you were in school. Is that
something you still do?
J.J. Redick: I like to write, I like to reflect, and not just poetry, I like
to write my thoughts down. I think it's good for people who are more
introspective, and it helps me get a better understanding of myself.
IGN Sports: I read one of your poems where you said you're only influenced by
the rhymes of Nas. Is hip hop the evolution of poetry?
J.J. Redick: No question, the majority of music is poetry. When I wrote that,
I listened to Nas every day, that's all I would listen to. I listen to a lot
of hip hop artists, and I think hip hop and poetry go hand in hand. The Def
Jam Poetry on HBO is just so sick to me.
IGN Sports: Getting back to basketball, how excited are you to be joining a
young, talented team like the Magic?
J.J. Redick: It's a sleeper team. They had a great end to last season. They
went 16-6 their last 22 games. They got great young players, great vets, and
if I can add a little outside shooting, a little competitiveness, I think we
have a chance to be a playoff team.
IGN Sports: How's your back feeling?
J.J. Redick: It feels good. I've taken a lot of time off…it's the longest
I've ever taken off basketball. It's been two months since I've had a
competitive workout. It has been a little frustrating, but I think it'll be a
few more weeks of strengthening my back before I can get out there.
IGN Sports: When you were doing the motion-capture work, everyone was talking trash, having a good time. Do you talk more on the court or on your Xbox?
J.J. Redick: The thing is, I really mellowed on the court. I really don't talk
that much trash. If anything, it's really subtle sarcasm. It's never like
'You can't stop me mo-fo!' I just compete, it's what I do. When I'm on the
sticks, though, I talk a lot of junk. Halo, put the mic on me and I talk a
lot of junk. Me and my buddies play a lot of games 2-on-2 and the other night
I got in fistfights with two of my best friends over videogames because we
were talking so much trash to each other. [laughs]
IGN Sports: Did you give the NBA 2K7 producers any advice on how to create
you in the game?
J. J. Redick: Make him a guy who can score. He doesn't have to play great
defense, I don't care about that. A decent looking guy who can score, that's
what I want out of my guy.
IGN Sports: If you had to compare your game to someone in the NBA right now,
who would it be?
J. J. Redick: This might be a little far fetched, but I would like to be
compared to Ray Allen. He's the ultimate guy who I wish I could become. He's
so good at what he does, so smooth, and he's been my favorite player ever
since Jordan retired. The guys I've tried to pattern my game after are Reggie
Miller, Rip Hamilton, Michael Redd, and Ray Allen. Guys who can move well
without the ball and shoot it from any area.
IGN Sports: What do you need to improve on the most before playing your first
game for the Magic?
J.J. Redick: My ball handling and my strength. Going into the league, the knock
people give me on defense, I don't really buy it. I don't think defense has
anything to do with how tall you are or how quick you are. If you compete on
the defensive end, you're going to be fine.
IGN Sports: To wrap things up, how about your all-time Duke starting five…
J.J. Redick: This is hard, but I have to go with Bobby Hurley, Johnny Dawkins,
Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, and Elton Brand. I'll be the sixth man…I'm
cool with that.
Look for College Hoops 2K7 to hit stores this fall, complete with J.J. Redick's
sweet jumper. And be sure to keep your eye out for Redick on Xbox Live. He
might lay bricks in the videogame, but when it comes to real life, he's as good
a shooter as I've ever seen.
