Orlando Magic assistant coach Patrick Ewing is expected to be announced
today as a member of the latest class into the Basketball Hall of Fame. The
inductees will be announced before the Final Four title game in San Antonio.
Ewing, among 15 candidates for enshrinement, won a national title with
Georgetown in 1984 before going onto a sterling career in the NBA. He
finished his career as a player with the Magic in 2002. "Whatever happens,
will happen. If I'm inducted, great," Ewing said at a news conference held
before the Magic faced his old team, the New York Knicks. "Did I ever think I
would be in the Hall of Fame growing up? I never really thought about it.
I've been to the Hall of Fame [in Springfield, Mass.] many times in grade
school and high school. Growing up in Cambridge, we had trips to the Hall of
Fame and took tours of it. I never thought about one day I might possibly be
in it. It would be great." Asked what he thought of the Knicks' hire of
General Manager Donnie Walsh, who is expected to clean house, he said, "I
stay out of Knicks politics.
