Orlando Magic could be 'very active' in free agency
When the NBA's 2015 free agency period begins Wednesday at 12:01 a.m., much of
the attention will focus on where Marc Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge and Kevin
Love will go and how the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and New York
Knicks will attempt to harness their abundant salary-cap space.

available and a key decision to make about one of their own players,
restricted free agent-to-be Tobias Harris.

After back-to-back-to-back seasons of 20, 23 and 25 wins, the Magic's
on-court deficiencies are obvious. The team must improve markedly on defense.
Orlando also needs more players who are proficient on both ends of the court,
and the team would benefit from adding at least one veteran in the prime of
his career who can help win close games.

Free agency could allow the franchise to improve in those areas — and
Hennigan said it's possible the Magic will be "very active" once Wednesday

It does seem unlikely, however, that the Magic will enter the sweepstakes for

to re-sign their own free agents.

Last summer, the Magic were able to sign unrestricted power forward Channing
Frye to a four-year deal worth a total of $32 million. In order to attract

It's unclear how much cap space the Magic will have. The exact amount will
depend on whether the team makes one or more moves to free up more money. The

shooting guard Ben Gordon on or before Wednesday.

What accounts for the discrepancy of $623,580?
The minute the Magic selected Hezonja fifth overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, a
salary of $3,117,900 automatically started to count toward the Magic's
2015-16 cap figure. But almost all teams sign their first-round picks to up
to 120 percent of the salaries specified in the collective bargaining
agreement. So Hezonja's first-year salary will be $3,741,480.
The Magic's possible cap figures of $14.6 million or $15.2 million take into
account the cap holds for Harris and fellow restricted free agent-to-be Kyle
O'Quinn and unrestricted free agent Willie Green. The figures also assume the
Magic will not waive Devyn Marble or Dewayne Dedmon, whose salaries for
2015-16 are unguaranteed.

the players that are already on the roster. We expect to see a sizable uptick
in our defensive abilities next season."

The power forward position is the weakest position on Orlando's roster, even
though Aaron Gordon and Harris are combo forwards who can play at that spot
when opponents don't have especially rugged power forwards on the court.

All-Star power forward Paul Millsap would be an ideal fit for Orlando
(although he's not a rim protector). The Magic attempted to acquire him from
the Utah Jazz prior to the 2012-13 season. But it seems unlikely Millsap
would want to sign with the Magic given that he plays for the Atlanta Hawks,
one of the league's top teams.

Harris' situation will be fascinating.

in 2015-16.
