The NBA's free agency period opens Wednesday, and the Orlando Magic's needs
this summer are obvious.
They need to upgrade at power forward. They'd like to add a rim protector.
They should add at least one veteran in the prime of his career who can help
the youngsters win close games. And they need a second- or third-string point
guard.
In an ideal scenario for the Magic, team executives would be able to walk
into a meeting with LaMarcus Aldridge or Kevin Love, offer a max contract and
reach an agreement right then and there.
That scenario, however, is not realistic this summer. Orlando's warm weather
and lack of a state income tax almost certainly won't make up for the Magic's
last three seasons in the NBA cellar.
So what might the Magic do with their available cap space, which currently
sits at $15.2 million?

Here are some players who'd make sense.
Paul Millsap
Position: Power forward. Age: 30.
Scouting report: Let's be frank: It's unlikely Millsap, a two-time All-Star,
would sign with the Magic. With him in the mix, the Atlanta Hawks won an
Eastern Conference-best 60 games last season. Why would he want to leave that
situation? But if he did, he'd be perfect for the Magic. He excels on offense
and puts in effort on defense. The Magic tried to acquire him from the Utah
Jazz prior to the 2012-13 season. His only downside: Although he's a solid
defender, he's not a rim protector. For the Magic to convince him to sign
with them, they'd probably need to free up more cap space and offer him a max
deal.

David West

player the Magic lack. Most importantly, he'd instantly become the Magic's
locker-room leader. But he'll turn 35 in late August. To have any hope of
landing West, the Magic would have to overpay him.

Thaddeus Young

solid veteran — and the Magic need more solid veterans who are in the primes
of their careers.

Robin Lopez
Position: Center. Age: 27.
Scouting report: Lopez would help solve many of Orlando's problems on
defense. He's a strong defender who protects the rim. He's not a scorer and

Aldridge, spaced the floor with a good midrange offensive game; could Magic
center Nik Vucevic, who likes to drift out of the low post, do what Aldridge
did offensively? One more thing to remember: The Lopez family loves Disney.
Seriously. They love Disney. The Magic could leverage that.

Ed Davis
Position: Power forward. Age: 26.
Scouting report: Davis might be the caliber of player the Magic can attract.
He averaged 8.3 points and 7.6 rebounds for an awful Los Angeles Lakers team
last season. Still, beware of players who put up good stats for poor teams.
He's a decent-to-good shot-blocker but is an average defender. He has no
shooting range, which would hurt the Magic's spacing.

Rodney Stuckey
Position: Combo guard. Age: 29.

fill that role. But Stuckey could do the job, too. Stuckey made 39.0 percent
of his 3-pointers last season, but historically he's been a bad 3-point
shooter. Stuckey's a solid veteran. He also has a long history with Magic
assistant GM Scott Perry, and the Magic have leaped at chances to bring in
players whom Perry respects and knows well.

Scouting report: Koufos, who played for the Memphis Grizzlies last season,

Tyler Hansbrough

Scouting report: Many Magic players can't stand Hansbrough, who played for

Evan Fournier in the mouth during a game in Toronto last season. But while
Hansbrough is the kind of player you can't stand as an opponent, he's the
kind of player you like having as a teammate. Yes, he excels at irritating
opponents, and sometimes a team needs an instigator. Hansbrough wouldn't be a
starter for the Magic, but his energy might be helpful off the bench.
