SAN FRANCISCO -- The Padres took one on the chin Sunday afternoon.
After struggling to solve left-hander Kirk Rueter, the Padres got a break and
took their swings against the Giants bullpen, tying the game on Terrence
Long's pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth. But with momentum seemingly on
the Padres' side, J.T. Snow redirected the forces to deal a serious blow to
their seesaw playoff hopes.
Snow's tie-breaking, two-run double was the difference in an otherwise tight
ballgame as the Giants rallied for a 4-2 win over the Padres in front of
41,428 to take the three-game series.
With the loss, the Padres now trail the Giants by four games in the National
League Wild Card and fell 6 1/2 back of the Dodgers in the NL West. The Dodgers
rallied to win in Colorado.
The Padres have 12 games remaining in the regular season and will face both
the Dodgers and the Giants on their upcoming homestand, but with the Cubs and
Astros also in the Wild Card hunt, the Padres find themselves in the
unenviable position of having to win out.
