Loretta returns after surgery

PHOENIX -- Mark Loretta might have been a little out of it after surgery on his
left thumb Tuesday, but he was with it enough to know the difference between
good news and bad.
Going in, he knew a repair job would be good news and a reconstruction would be
bad news. Fortunately for Loretta and the Padres, the surgery was a success
and he should be back ready to be in the lineup again around Aug. 1.
"That was the first thing I thought about when I came out of surgery -- whether
I had to have the reconstruction," Loretta said, standing in the visitors'
clubhouse at Bank One Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon. "But the first thing the
doctor said to me was, 'Things went well. We didn't have to use the tendon.' "
Had Dr. Don Sheridan felt it necessary to reconstruct the ligament in the thumb
, he would have used a tendon from Loretta's wrist. But Loretta said the chances
were good going into the operation that the lesser of the two evils was in
play.
"The doctor gave me an 80-20 chance going in, saying he was 80 percent sure he
could do it without the reconstruction," Loretta said.
In part because it was an "acute" injury that was recent, the tissue was such
that it could be repaired and didn't need the full reconstruction, Loretta said.
Loretta feels confident that he'll be the same player he has been his last two
seasons with the Padres, including two team MVP awards and an All-Star invite
last year, when he returns from the injury. Having gone through an injury on
the same thumb four years earlier, he says he knows what to expect out of the
rehabilitation process and the probable outcome.
"It was as good as new before, so I don't see why it wouldn't be this time,"
Loretta said. "That's something that factored into the decision to do it this
way."
