SAN DIEGO -- Major League Baseball acted quickly and decisively Monday in
disciplining members of the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs for their
part in an on-field altercation on Saturday at Wrigley Field.
San Diego pitcher Chris Young was suspended five games after an incident
that saw the right-hander hit Chicago's Derrek Lee with a pitch in the
bottom of the fourth inning of what eventually became a 1-0 San Diego victory.
The announcement was made Monday by Bob Watson, vice president of on-field
operations for Major League Baseball.
Lee, who took the first swing at Young after the two had a brief conversation
as the Cubs' first baseman made his way to first base, was also suspended
five games. Young retaliated by taking a swing at Lee. Neither player connected
with their attempted punches.
Both players were fined undisclosed amounts for their conduct during the
incident, as were Padres players Jake Peavy and Brian Giles. Peavy was ejected
from the game after the incident for "aggressive behavior," according to the
umpires. Giles, currently on the 15-day disabled list, wasn't ejected.
Chicago hitting coach Gerald Perry, who was ejected on Saturday, received a
three-game suspension and undisclosed fine for his actions during the incident.
Young and Lee's suspensions are scheduled to begin Tuesday. If appealed, the
suspensions will be held in abeyance until the process is complete. Young --
who is scheduled to make his next start Friday against the Red Sox at PETCO
Park -- will likely appeal his suspension.
The Padres open a three-game series at 7:05 p.m. PT on Tuesday against the
Orioles at PETCO Park.
