"We've been following him since he was an amateur," Towers said.
"He had surgery at the end of the year, so we're keeping an eye on that."
Fukudome's impending arrival in the United States comes during what many
consider a down year for free agents.
"It's the worst market we've seen in a long time," Towers said.
Peavy honored:
San Diego right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy -- considered to be the front-runner
for the NL's Cy Young Award -- was selected Wednesday the recipient of the
2007 Bullet Rogan Legacy Award for being the top pitcher in the NL.
Peavy went 19-6 with a 2.54 ERA, leading the NL in victories, ERA and
strikeouts (240).
The Cy Young Award winner for the NL will be announced on Nov. 15.
