Padres name hitting, bench coaches
Consultant Lefebvre promoted; Simmons rejoins organization
By Corey Brock / MLB.com
SAN DIEGO -- The Padres filled two positions on their coaching staff Monday
when Jim Lefebvre was named hitting coach and Ted Simmons was selected as
bench coach for 2009.
"I am excited to welcome Jim Lefebvre and Ted Simmons to our staff," Padres
manager Bud Black said in a release. "Their knowledge and experience will
help every player on our team, and the familiarity they have with the players
and organization as a whole will allow them to smoothly transition into their
new roles."
Lefebvre, 66, has been a Minor League hitting consultant with the Padres
since 2006 and, most recently, served as the manager of the Chinese national
team since it was formed in 2003. He managed the team in the World Baseball
Classic in 2006 and the Beijing Olympics in August.
Lefebvre, who has a 417-442 record as a Major League manager with the
Mariners, the Brewers and the Cubs, previously has been a hitting coach with
the Giants, A's, Brewers and Reds.
Simmons, 59, served most of this past season as the bench coach in Milwaukee
as part of manager Ned Yost's staff. When Yost was dismissed on Sept. 15,
Simmons was reassigned to an advisory role with the team.
The Padres were granted permission by Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug
Melvin to talk to Simmons last month, as Simmons' contract with the Brewers
expired on Oct. 31.
"We are very fortunate to add two coaches who have a history with this
organization," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. "Jim's experience as
a manager, hitting coach and instructor make him a perfect fit for our young
ballclub while Ted adds the dynamic of having worked in both the front office
and dugout at the Major League level."
Simmons is no stranger to the Padres organization. He served as a Major
League scout for the organization from 1999-2007. After a 21-year playing
career, Simmons headed the Cardinals' Minor League system and was the general
manager in Pittsburgh briefly before working in the front office in Cleveland
and then San Diego.
"You try to stay ahead of your manager in games. While he might be thinking
of two or three things at one time, there might be something he didn't
consider," Simmons said. "Sometimes two heads and three heads are better than
one. Until the decision is made, a bench coach is there to present
alternatives in advance. Ideally, you want to stay out ahead of the manager."
Padres hitting coach Wally Joyner resigned during the final week of the
regular season, citing a difference in approach to hitting to that of the
organization. Bench coach Craig Colbert was let go a day after the regular
season ended.
The Padres also announced Monday that pitching coach Darren Balsley, bullpen
coach Darrel Akerfelds, first-base coach Rick Renteria and third-base coach
Glenn Hoffman will return in 2009.
