The Heat scored plenty, outscoring the Hornets 18-0 on fast breaks in its 81-79 victory in Game 1. It took advantage of a 12-0 edge in the third quarter that helped build its lead to 66-59 at the start of the fourth. Shooting guard David Wesley said if they're going to have a chance at tying the series Wednesday night, they can't get outscored like that again. "In the East there is not really a lot of fast breaks, but to give up 18-0, that's huge," Wesley said. "But if we can get a few and cut down on theirs, that could be the difference. I know it's not that simple, but I think that's a good start." SITTING OUT: Starting point guard Baron Davis and backup Darrell Armstrong, who both have sprained right ankles, sat out Monday's practice at the University of Miami. Both are expected to play Wednesday. "Either he should give me his ankle or I should give him mine," Armstrong said after Sunday's game. "But the bottom line is that we both have to gut it out. That's what the playoffs are all about." Armstrong played 16 minutes and went scoreless Sunday night. Davis played 36 minutes and scored 17, but had difficulty keeping up with Heat rookie guard Dwyane Wade, who made the game-winning shot with 1.3 seconds remaining. HEADING BACK HOME: Instead of remaining in New Orleans between Games 3 and 4, Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said his team will return to Miami. Van Gundy said having the long, two-day break is the reason they decided to return. But they also will avoid the distraction of frequenting Bourbon Street. ENCOURAGING RUN: Hornets coach Tim Floyd said he was encouraged by his team's defensive play during several stretches in Game 1. The Hornets were able to overcome an 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 79 with 53.9 seconds remaining. They also held forward Lamar Odom, who scored 17 points, scoreless in the fourth quarter. Shooting guard Eddie Jones also was held scoreless in the quarter. He finished with nine points in 37 minutes. "I was encouraged by our resolve," Floyd said. "But we're going have to get something in transition (offense) to help us along the way in this series." CONCERNED: The Heat collapsed its defensive pressure in the post by doubling center Jamaal Magloire almost every time he touched the ball. That limited him to 14 points. But Van Gundy remains concerned about the Hornets guards' ability to make 3-pointers. The Hornets made seven of 19 3-pointers in Game 1. Wesley, who scored 14 points, made three-of-six and Davis went four-of-eight. "Their 3-point shooting is a major concern," Van Gundy said. "It's easier for us to actually try and double team their guards. But when you also have to double team their bigs, it makes it difficult with their two guys sitting out there (in the perimeter) shooting. I thought Wesley and Davis shot the ball extremely well from the 3-point line." STUNNING: The Heat was so stunned about its two-point victory against the Hornets, not many players did much talking immediately after the game. "It was silent at first and I said, "Nobody died around here, you can let your emotions out," and everybody then started cheering," said Heat second-year forward Caron Butler, who scored 12 points. . . . . . . .
