Brown has won the NBA's Sportsmanship Award, league sources said Friday. Brown will be presented the Joe Dumars Trophy by former Detroit All-Star Bob Lanier in a pregame ceremony before today's playoff game against the Miami Heat at New Orleans Arena. Brown has been the Central Division winner of the award each of the past three seasons, but this season captured 1,220 of a possible 1,320 points, including 95 first-place votes, in balloting by fellow NBA players. Brown's vote total surpassed the Los Angeles Clippers' Elton Brand (1,139), the Memphis Grizzlies' Shane Battier (985) and the New Jersey Nets' Kerry Kittles (880), the other division winners. Players were awarded seven points for each first-place vote, five points for each second-place vote, three for third and one for fourth-place votes. The award, first given to Dumars following the 1995-96 season, honors a player who exemplified the ideals of sportsmanship on the court, ethical behavior and fair play. Each NBA team nominated one player for consideration, then a panel of former NBA players that included Walt Frazier, Mike Glenn, Tommy Heinsohn, Eddie Johnson and Gil McGregor selected the four division winners. This year marked the first time NBA players determined the winner. The NBA will make a $25,000 donation to the P.J. and Dee Brown Foundation, as well as $10,000 to charities designated by the other division winners. Brown's win gives the Hornets two Dumars winners. Guard Steve Smith won in 2001-02 when he was with the San Antonio Spurs. New Orleans native Avery Johnson won in 1997-98 when he was with San Antonio. . . . . . . .
