Wade's Trey Caps Thrilling Heat Win
MIAMI, April 30 (Ticker) -- Dwyane Wade 3-pointer with 53 seconds
left beat the shot clock, snapped a tie and lifted the Miami Heat
to an emotional 87-83 victory over the New Orleans Hornets in
Game 5 of their first-round series.
The fourth-seeded Heat overcame another virtuoso performance by
Baron Davis to take a 3-2 series lead. They can advance to the
Eastern Conference Semifinals for the first time in four years
with a win Sunday at New Orleans.
Wade was a strong third in Rookie of the Year voting and wasted no
time validating that position by winning the series opener with a
driving shot in the final seconds. After sub-par performances in
Games 3 and 4, he bounced back with another solid showing.
The 6-4 guard had 21 points, five rebounds and five assists and
sparked the Heat early in the fourth quarter, which featured seven
lead changes and four ties. And once again, he came up with a
clutch shot.
"I want to score and make the plays," Wade said. "It's great to be
in that situation again, even though it wasn't right at the end."
With the shot clock running down, Lamar Odom threw a pass from the
left wing to the right corner to Wade, whose quickly released shot
splashed through as the buzzer sounded, giving Miami an 83-80 lead.
"I looked up and there were three seconds left, didn't have a clear
shot and saw Dwyane waving his hands in the corner," Odom said. "My
focus at that point was to get it over to him. He has the guts, and
with a good look like that, I was raising my hands because I knew it
was going in."
"On that play, you want to catch it and shoot it, because you know
there is such little time," Wade said.
Wade is developing a quick reputation as a clutch player.
"That's my second time cheering for that dude in this series," Odom
said. "No. 3 comes up huge for us again. He's an NBA player. We've
been able to count on him a lot."
"He wanted the ball and wanted to make the play," Heat coach Stan
Van Gundy said.
On the next possession, Caron Butler blocked a 3-pointer by Darrell
Armstrong, whose second attempt hit the side of the backboard.
Butler made three free throws in the final 31 seconds to seal the
victory for the Heat, who have won 14 straight home games dating to
March 2.
Davis was phenomenal, playing through ankle and elbow injuries to
collect 33 points and seven assists, many in dynamic fashion. But it
was just not enough to lift the fifth-seeded Hornets to the first
road win of the series.
"The guys played their hearts out," Hornets coach Tim Floyd said.
"Davis came up big for us, but we didn't get it done."
"All the points in the world don't mean much if you don't get the
'W' and that didn't happen," Davis said.
The game featured six technical fouls and the ejection of Heat guard
Rafer Alston, who picked up one for a shoving match with Hornets
forward George Lynch midway through the third quarter and was tossed
for punching Hornets guard David Wesley in the groin with 1:50 left
in the period.
"That was an absolute war out there," Van Gundy said.
Wade had a pair of hoops in an 8-0 run that opened the final quarter
and gave Miami a 66-63 lead. Davis tied it with a three-point play.
Davis gave New Orleans a 76-75 lead with a 3-pointer at the 3:40 mark.
Eddie Jones, who scored 25 points, answered with a 3-pointer.
Lynch, who missed his first eight shots, sank a jumper to tie it.
After Jones missed two free throws, Jamaal Magloire scored inside to
give the Hornets their last lead at 80-78 with 2:18 to go.
Odom, who scored 16 points, tied it with a pair from the line with 1:37.
"Both teams scratched, fought and clawed, but we we are the ones who
got it done," Odom said.
After Miami erased an 11-point deficit, Davis took control of the
game at the end of the first half, scoring nine of New Orleans'
last 11 points to help open a 46-42 lead. He had a 3-pointer and
a pair of tough driving layups before throwing in a 70-footer just
after the horn.
A three-point play by Davis gave the Hornets their largest lead of
the second half at 54-45.
"He laid it all on the line for us and played, probably, his best
game of the year," said Hornets forward P.J. Brown, who had 12 points
and 13 rebounds.
