Bass, the team's executive vice president of basketball operations and general manager, announced Wednesday his plans to retire. Majority owner George Shinn hasn't announced his list of potential candidates to replace Bass, but Bristow hopes to be on it. "Whatever happens, I feel like I'm already on the team. It's just a matter of what needs to be done," Bristow said. "As a team player, you want to do what's best for the team." Shinn has imposed no timetable for when he wants the position filled. With draft upcoming June 24, Bass won't officially retire until June 30. Bristow will assist Bass and Shinn with the evaluation of the Coach Tim Floyd and his assistants. Bristow also will help with the team's draft preparations and other personnel decisions regarding possible trades and free agents. Shinn did not make any public comments Thursday regarding his search. But on Wednesday, Shinn said it's pretty obvious that Bristow is a candidate. Bristow will be the only candidate with experience with the team as vice president of basketball operations. He held that position from 1990-91. From 1997-98, he held the same position with the Denver Nuggets. Bristow was the Hornets' head coach from 1990 to 1996, compiling a 207-203 record. He has the second-most victories in franchise history. He was hired for his current position last summer. "A lot of discussion, especially with George and his advisers, I think will eventually come to pass," Bristow said. To help draw a pool of candidates, Shinn plans to seek advice from the league. Two potential candidates who could join Bristow on the list are Wayne Cooper, the Sacramento Kings' vice president of basketball operations, and Denver Nuggets assistant general manager David Fredman. Fredman spent 27 years with the Jazz, working in basketball operations for 14 seasons. He assisted with draft preparation, contract negotiations and talent evaluation. From 1987 to 1999, he was an assistant coach, focusing on advance scouting and game preparation. With the New Orleans Jazz, Fredman began as an intern in public relations and ticket sales and later was the franchise's director of media relations. Fredman declined comment on the New Orleans job because he's under contract with the Nuggets. Cooper, who played for UNO and was the Sun Belt Conference MVP as a senior in 1978, said the Hornets have not contacted him and declined further comment. He was a candidate for the Toronto Raptors' vacant general manager's job but withdrew from consideration. That job has not been filled. . . . . . . .
