Now he's ready to take a closer look at them. Shinn is expected to begin the first round of interviews, starting with former New Jersey Nets coach Byron Scott, today in New Orleans. Contacted by telephone at his home in Livingston, N.J., on Sunday, Scott declined comment. The only comments Scott has made about the job came last week during ABC's NBA studio show before Thursday's telecast of Game 5 between the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs. Scott said he was interested in the job and has been a big fan of point guard Baron Davis and several other Hornets players. "If the owner gives me a call, I'll be more than happy to go down there and talk with them," Scott said during the show. Scott made no mention about his scheduled interview when he appeared Sunday on the studio show before Game 6 between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Sacramento Kings in the Western Conference semifinals. A league source said the Hornets also plan to interview former NBA coaches Mike Fratello, Brian Hill and George Karl. Former Los Angeles Lakers player Michael Cooper, who coaches the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA, also is expected to be interviewed, the source said. The Hornets have asked for permission to speak to Hill, and it's been granted by the Nets, according to a league source. Hill is in his first year as an assistant with the Nets. While under contract with the team, Hill can't speak publicly about his interest in the Hornets job. Hill, a former head coach with the Orlando Magic and Vancouver Grizzlies, was a finalist for the Hornets job last year before it was offered to Tim Floyd, who was fired after the Hornets failed to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs. Shinn has said he is interested in hiring an experienced coach who has succeeded in the NBA. But according to a league source, the team also will look at some high-profile NBA assistant coaches such as native New Orleanian Donald Newman, an assistant with the Nets; Memphis Grizzlies assistant Lionel Hollins; and New Orleanian Avery Johnson. The team is considering Hornets assistant Alvin Gentry. But Gentry said Saturday that he had not been contacted for an interview. . . . . . . .
