Hornets Add Jim Cleamons To Coaching Staff
New Orleans - The New Orleans Hornets announced that they
have hired Jim Cleamons as an assistant coach. Cleamons
joins Darrell Walker and Kenny Gattison to round out the
staff of Head Coach Byron Scott.
"Jim will be an integral part of making our team a
championship contender," said Scott. "He has coached the
best in the business, from Michael Jordan to Shaquille
O'Neal, and has helped them reach the ultimate level of
success, so I'm anxious for him to impart that knowledge
to our players and help teach them how to get to that
level."
Cleamons brings 14 seasons as either a head or assistant
coach and six NBA championships with him to the Hornets
bench. He began his coaching career in 1989 when he joined
former teammate Phil Jackson's staff with the Chicago Bulls
(the first year of Jackson's tenure in Chicago) and helped
the Bulls reel off three straight NBA championships in 1991,
1992 and 1993. In his seven seasons in Chicago (1989-1996),
the Bulls posted a 414-160 (.721) record. Cleamons left the
Bulls to become head coach of the Dallas Mavericks following
the 1995-96 campaign. He remained in Dallas for one-and-a-half
seasons, where he compiled a record of 28-72 (.280) .
Cleamons and Jackson were reunited in 1999-00 in Los Angeles
when Jackson was hired as head coach of the Lakers and brought
Cleamons with him as an assistant. The Lakers would go on to
win the next three straight NBA championships (2000, 2001,
2002) and reach the NBA Finals in 2004. Cleamons spent a total
of five seasons (1999-2004) as an assistant with the Lakers,
during which time the team posted a 287-123 (.700) record.
Before beginning his coaching career, Cleamons spent nine
seasons in the NBA as a player, averaging 8.3 points and 3.9
assists in 652 games. After spending his rookie season with
the Lakers (playing alongside NBA legends Jerry West and Wilt
Chamberlain), he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a
future draft pick. Cleamons spent the next five seasons in
Cleveland and had his best statistical season in 1975-76 with
the Cavs when he averaged 12.2 points, 5.2 assists and 4.3
rebounds in 82 games. Following the 1976-77 season, Cleamons
signed with the New York Knicks as a free agent. He spent
two-and-a-half seasons with the Knicks, where he was a
teammate of Jackson and played under then Head Coach (and
current Hornets Vice President of Basketball Operations)
Willis Reed. Cleamons was traded to the Washington Bullets
during the 1979-80 season. He finished the season with the
Bullets before retiring as a player.
