Backups put starters in place
Regulars can't defeat reserves in scrimmage

The pace on Day 5 of the Hornets' first training camp under
Byron Scott didn't slow any, with three feverish quarters of
a five-on-five scrimmage capping Saturday's three-hour workout.
Flying bodies were the order of the day. At one point, Baron
Davis knocked free-agent Junior Harrington into a row of
folding chairs comprising one of the benches on the
Alario Center sideline.
Center Chris Andersen hit the floor hard, diving over a fallen
David Wesley, and stayed there for a time until trainer Terry
Kofler arrived to ask, "Are you hurt?"
"Nah," Andersen said. "I'm just taking a break."
The intensity level was increased by the fact that the reserves
were beating the regulars through the first two periods. The
subs won the scrimmage by six points.
Scott was ready to call a halt to the proceedings after two
eight-minute quarters, with the subs ahead, but the regulars
voiced enough opposition that Scott continued according to his
script.
"I had three quarters scheduled, but I thought they were pretty
drained after the second one," Scott said. "They talked me into
the last one. The black (first) team was down after that. The
white team did a heck of a job."
INJURIES: Free-agent forward Rodney Rogers skipped Saturday's
workout with a sore left hamstring, as did free-agent forward
Britton Johnsen (ankle), who sat out for the second consecutive
day.
Forward P.J. Brown injured his left ankle -- surgically repaired
before the beginning of last season -- diving for a loose
rebound during the scrimmage session.
He left the floor, iced the ankle, then returned to shoot free
throws.
"They're all minor things," Scott said. "We'll let those guys
get some treatment later (Saturday) and Sunday, and we'll see
how they feel before practice. If they can't go, that's OK.
They'll only miss one day. But I think they'll be able to go."
ROOKIE SINGALONG: The five first-year players in camp --
J.R. Smith, Tim Pickett, Sean Finn, Nate Williams and Ray Young
-- were forced to sing after practice as part of the rookie hazing.
Well, sort of.
After much consternation, Pickett broke into a rendition of
"Always and Forever," Young rapped, Smith tried to sing
"I Believe I Can Fly," and Finn belted out "Jingle Bells."
Williams, though, would not comply.
"I don't know any songs," he said.
The veterans planned to appropriate Williams' $98 per diem as a
fine, while Scott told the rookie to be prepared to sing today.
THAT BAD? Not long after the performance, Finn, a 7-foot center
from Dayton, and Young, a 6-5 guard from UCLA, were the first
two players cut.
The Hornets now have 17 players in camp and 18 on the roster,
counting injured forward Jamal Mashburn.
