Inside Training Camp: October 12, 2004
Head Coach Byron Scott
(on if he’s ready for Wednesday’s preseason opener)
Oh yeah. I’m looking forward to it. I think we’ll be able
to really gauge how far we’ve come in a short period of
time. I think our guys are excited about playing against
somebody else. It’ll be a good day for us tomorrow.
(on who won’t play tomorrow)
Rodney Rogers won’t play tomorrow. David Wesley won’t play
tomorrow. That’s about it.
(on if J.R. Smith will start)
J.R. will start tomorrow in place of David Wesley.
(on if the start is good to see J.R.’s progress and what he
needs to work on)
I know what he needs to work on already. I think it’ll be
good for him to get a taste of real NBA action first-hand. I
think it’ll do nothing but help him. I know what David Wesley
can do. He’s been fantastic at training camp. Unfortunately,
he had a slight hamstring pull that’ll probably keep him out
two games or so but it gives the rookie a chance to get his
feet wet and we’ll see what he can do.
(on what J.R. needs to work on)
Everything. A little bit of everything. But I tell you what,
every day he’s getting better and better. He has a very high
basketball IQ and that’s a good sign.
(on the fact that he’s seen a lot of good in J.R. to warrant
a start)
I have. I’ve seen him getting better and better every day.
He’s just got more comfortable offensively. I think he’s
gotten more confident on both ends of the court. I think the
fact that Baron’s helping him every single day, especially
on the defensive end, is helping him. That’s going to be the
biggest test for him, defense. He’s still young. He’s pretty
good on the ball. It’s just he has his problems when the ball
is not in his man’s hands. He starts to relax. I told him the
one thing that I want from him is to be down in the defensive
stance for 24 seconds. When you want to rest, you rest on
offense, but not on defense. He can shoot. He’s proven that.
We know how athletic he was so that hasn’t been a surprise
one bit. He’s done a heck of a job.
(on if he always calls the first round draft pick ‘Rookie’
or ‘Rook’)
Most of the time. I told him he’ll be ‘rook’ all year long
until the next training camp, so get used to it.
(on what he’ll want to see in the first preseason game)
I want to see how we play defense. That’s the number one
thing. I want to see how our transition defense is. I want
to see how we get up and down the floor offensively and our
execution offensively. Those are basically the four main
things. Then obviously the last thing is rebounding. I want
to see how we do against a very, very big team. Dallas has
three or four guys that are 7-foot plus. I don’t know how
many guys Nellie (Don Nelson) is going to play tomorrow but
with Nellie you’ve got to prepare for everybody so it’ll
be interesting to see the type of personnel that they put
on the floor.
(on what he sees in P.J. Brown that will help at both power
forward and center)
He gives us more versatility. He gives us another guy who can
play the five (center) spot that can knock down shots from
15, 16 feet, that’s a heck of a defender and a great
rebounder so when he’s at the five, it gives me a lot of
options that I can go to on the offensive end.

Guard J.R.Smith
(on if he’s excited to get the start on Wednesday)
I’m excited but at the same time I’m down because Wesley
went down. That’s what we don’t need but he’ll be fine
for the regular season. I’m pretty excited for myself, though.
(on how camp has gone so far)
The quickest thing I’ve learned is playing hard when
you’re tired. The thing I need to improve on is just keep
playing defense, staying down low, not letting my man get
the best of me and just playing hard as a team.
(on what he hopes to do tomorrow)
First thing is to win. I do want to play good for myself but
I’ll do whatever it takes to win. You know it’s preseason
but you still want to execute and win the game. I don’t
really have any goals for myself.
(on if he feels any pressure)
When I first came in, I thought there was pressure but now
that the guys have talked to me, I don’t think there’s much
pressure on me. I think it’s more pressure on the team than
just myself.
(on if he’s been able to practice in the backcourt with Baron)
David (Wesley) went down yesterday, so I went basically all day
yesterday and today in the backcourt. We did a few drills
earlier in the week with Baron and I in the backcourt so I’m
more comfortable playing with him.
(on the complementary skills between the two)
He’s an athletic and scoring point guard and I’m the same
thing, just at the two (shooting guard). In the offense we run,
we really don’t have a one or a two so both guards have to
know both spots.
(on being called ‘Rook)
It’s good because I know when I hear it, they’re thinking
about me. It’s good to think about me and not call my name
than say it at all because when they’re not saying anything
at all to you, that’s when you have to worry.
