Scott: Cuts coming soon
Hornets coach says next roster moves likely to be Tuesday

LOS ANGELES -- Hornets coach Byron Scott said the next round of
cuts likely will be Tuesday.
The Hornets have 17 players on their training camp roster; 12
can be on the active regular-season roster.
Guards Junior Harrington, Tim Pickett, forwards Britton Johnsen
and Tremaine Fowlkes and center Nate Williams appear to be on
the bubble.
Scott said Friday that forward Lee Nailon has a good chance of
making the final roster.
"I've got three or four guys fighting for one or two spots,"
Scott said. "So I have some decisions to make. You want to go
out there and play well, because the pressure is on now."
Scott said he will make additional cuts after the Hornets play
their final preseason game Friday in San Antonio.
"I've never had this many discussions with my coaching staff,
trying to figure out what they think as well," Scott said.
"The final decision obviously has to come down to me. But you
have to look at everything. All these guys have great character;
they're good people. All of them have some special talent, some
negatives as well. There's not really one guy who has kind of
stood out. But they've all had their chance, their moments. It's
going to be very difficult to make that decision."
MINUTES WATCHED: With the preseason winding down, Scott wants his
starters to get used to their normal playing time for the regular
season. In the final preseason game Friday, Scott wants starters
P.J. Brown, Jamaal Magloire and George Lynch to average between
25 and 30 minutes.
"I'm trying to get the starters right now into a rhythm," Scott
said. "It's still hard to do, because we have three guys still
injured."
INJURY UPDATE: Starting point guard Baron Davis tested his strained
left ankle during the team's Sunday morning shootaround and told
Scott he could play against the Los Angeles Clippers. But Scott
decided against it.
"I know what he can do, so I told him to get some more rest and
be ready for the last preseason game," Scott said.
Davis missed Saturday's game against the Sacramento Kings after
feeling slight discomfort during shooting drills before the game.
For the second consecutive game, Junior Harrington started in
Davis' spot. Forward David West also sat out his second game
because of back spasms. West said he injured his back Friday
while lifting weights.
Forward Rodney Rogers (strained right hamstring) and shooting
guard David Wesley (strained right hamstring) have sat out all
seven preseason games.
IMPROVEMENT NEEDED: Rookie J.R. Smith entered Sunday's game as
the second-leading scorer among rookies with a 13.9 average.
But Scott said Smith must improve defensively to get significant
playing time in the regular season. Smith has shown a tendency
to let up when the player he's defending does not have the ball.
"He's going to be playing behind a veteran (Wesley) who only
gives up size at that position," Scott said. "He doesn't give
up anything else. He's tough, smart and got experience, and
guys don't get easy baskets (against him). J.R. is going have
to do that as well. Everything is based on the defensive end."
