Hornets place two on injured list

Hornets coach Byron Scott finalized his 12-man roster by placing
second-round draft pick Tim Pickett and guard Junior Harrington
on the injured list with back spasms.
Monday was the league's deadline for teams to pare their rosters
to 12 active players before the season opens. Most of the league
opens tonight and the Hornets' opener is Wednesday night against
the Dallas Mavericks at New Orleans Arena.
Pickett and Harrington will continue practicing, but they cannot
play in regular-season games while on the injured list. Forward
Jamal Mashburn, who is out for the season with a knee injury,
remains on the injured list.
"Junior and Alex (Garcia) will probably be going back and forth
on the injured list all season long," Scott said. "For Tim, it's
just about him really getting into the process of learning what
we're doing every single day.
"Basically, he's getting a year to learn. We're trying to give
him an opportunity to stick with this team and learn our system
to eventually become a big-time contributor in the future."
Pickett played in four preseason games and averaged 3.5 points.
Harrington, signed as a free agent before camp started last
month, averaged 7.7 points and 3.6 assists in six preseason games.
They survived the final cut Sunday as forward Britton Johnsen
was released.
The Hornets' starters Wednesday are expected to be point guard
Baron Davis, shooting guard David Wesley, center Jamaal Magloire,
power forward P.J. Brown and small forward George Lynch. Rookie
shooting guard J.R. Smith is expected to be the top reserve.
"I think we have a little bit of everything from youth and
experience, to having guys who can play multiple positions, and
we have speed," Scott said. "The only thing we really don't have
maybe is some size. But other than that, I like what we got
because we have some tough kids on this team."
HIGHER NUMBERS: The Hornets have surpassed last season's season-
ticket total, and chief operating officer Jack Capella is
projecting they will exceed their 7,900 total achieved in the
team's inaugural season in New Orleans in 2002-03.
Capella said they have had surging sales among their 10- to
15-game packages.
"We're happy, but not satisfied," Capella said during Monday's
tipoff luncheon. "We really had a nice jump in season ticket
sales with these 10- to 15-game packages.
Capella said they have eight or nine luxury suites remaining to
be sold among the 54 at New Orleans Arena.
Part of the marketing push comes from the Hornets playing their
first season in the Western Conference, which features some of
the top players in the league.
The team has also pushed its advertising campaign around Scott,
who took the New Jersey Nets to the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003.
The Hornets finished next to last in attendance last year,
averaging 14,332 per game. But Capella said they hope to average
between 15,000 to 16,000 in the 17,200-seat facility this season.
"Obviously we want to sell the Arena out -- that's when I'll be
happy," Hornets owner George Shinn said. "But we're ahead of
where we were last year, and we're excited."
