Scott chastises bench for lack of intensity

MINNEAPOLIS -- The effort Hornets forward P.J. Brown gave
Saturday night wasn't bad. He ran hard, challenged shots,
played with intensity and guarded the baseline with
assertiveness.
But it still wasn't enough to keep Kevin Garnett, last season's
MVP, from having another fabulous game. Garnett finished with a
game-high 29 points, 15 rebounds and four assists to lead the
Timberwolves to a 99-92 victory over the Hornets at the Target
Center.
Hornets coach Byron Scott wished he would have received the same
effort from most of his backups. But he said he didn't see it,
especially in the second quarter when the Timberwolves ran past
the Hornets' backups like at a track meet.
"I'm very disappointed tonight in the second unit," Scott said.
"I made it known to them that I will play seven or eight guys
until they can prove to me that they can come in and play with
some intensity and some aggressiveness."
The Timberwolves outscored the Hornets 31-13 in the second
quarter, and led 54-40 at halftime.
In response, Scott kept all of his backups on the bench, except
for point guard Darrell Armstrong, in the third quarter. The
Hornets outscored the Timberwolves 31-16 in the quarter to take
a 71-70 lead entering the fourth.
The surge almost propelled them to a victory against one of the
elite teams in the Western Conference. But too many driving
baskets by guard Latrell Sprewell and Garnett's all-around
consistency handed the Hornets their third consecutive loss.
Sprewell scored seven of his 14 points in the fourth quarter.
Scott didn't single out any of the reserves after the game, but
rookie guard J.R. Smith and second-year forward David West did
not play in the second half. Smith played six minutes in the
first half and scored seven points. West went scoreless in six
minutes.
Forward Rodney Rogers played 14 minutes in the second half and
scored four points, and Armstrong scored five of his six points
in the second half.
"For us to be successful and win games, we need everybody to
come out and compete," said Brown, who scored 13 points and
grabbed six rebounds. "It's goes from the starting five to the
backup guys."
Garnett scored in double figures for the 168th consecutive game.
He made fallaway jumpers from the baseline, scoring 19 points in
the second half.
"A win is a win, and I'm always happy with a W," Garnett said.
"I don't care how we get it. We knew they were going to make a
run. If it's 8-0, you try to reverse the momentum."
The Timberwolves did that by outscoring the Hornets 29-21 in the
fourth quarter.
The Hornets got into a flow quickly in the first quarter, with
guard Baron Davis looking for shooters before taking shots.
Guard David Wesley started fast, hitting three of his first
six shots. The Hornets led after the first quarter -- 27-23 --
for the first time in three games.
All the momentum the Hornets built early was lost in the second
quarter. Sam Cassell, who took only one shot in the first quarter,
made five of seven shots for 13 points in the second.
Cassell scored six points during a momentum-changing 10-0 run
that pushed the Timberwolves' lead to nine. It reached 18
before the Timberwolves went into halftime leading by 14.
Davis and Wesley led the Hornets with 21 points. Center Jamaal
Magloire scored 10. But for the second consecutive game, the
Hornets were outrebounded, 44-31.
