Harrington signs 10-day deal; Davis sent to injured list

With no true backup point guard and starter Baron Davis
expected to miss at least two more weeks because of a
bruised right Achilles tendon, the Hornets re-signed
Junior Harrington on Friday and placed Davis on the
injured list.
Davis, who hasn't played since he was hurt Jan. 16 in
Toronto when he was kicked in the ankle, won't be ready
to return to the floor until at least Feb. 11, Coach
Byron Scott said Friday night.
Davis underwent an MRI exam Tuesday that the Hornets
said was negative.
Davis said after the game that he knew nothing of the
results and would just rest the injury.
"We pretty much expected for the next four or five games
he'd be out, and we're in a big need for a backup point
guard right now," Scott said. "I talked to him today and
said, 'Let's take two weeks. Get your body completely
healed, your Achilles, your back. Get your mind back
straight and understand what you have to do when you get
back here.'
"This will help both ways. We get a guy in here who knows
our system and has been with us pretty much all season
long, gets us a backup, and hopefully when Baron comes
back, he'll have renewed energy and passion, and we can
get back to playing these last 30-some games. He'll have
to be all-out for us."
The Hornets had to petition the NBA -- for the fourth
time this season -- in order to add a fourth player to
the injured list. The exemption came through late Friday
afternoon.
Harrington, waived Jan. 21 after the Hornets obtained
Casey Jacobsen, Jackson Vroman and Maciej Lampe in a
trade with the Phoenix Suns, was signed to a 10-day
contract.
Davis missed 19 games earlier this season with an inflamed
disc in his lower back.
Without a true backup, starter Dan Dickau has played 42,
35 and 42 minutes in the Hornets' last three games. He
played 48 minutes in New Orleans' 99-95 victory against
the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday at New Orleans Arena.
Harrington played five.
NO ANSWER: Philadelphia guard Allen Iverson missed Friday
night's game because of a bruised left rotator cuff and
flu-like symptoms.
He was replaced in the lineup by Willie Green.
VIPS: Dickau hosted a group from Alpha Company, 29th
Support Battalion from Honolulu, Hawaii, who this weekend
will be shipping off to the Middle East.
CAUTIONARY TALE: Sixers coach Jim O'Brien cautioned that
his team likely would not be taking the Hornets lightly,
despite New Orleans' record and the fact that the Sixers
had a 25-point lead before holding on for a 95-91 win in
Philadelphia 11 days earlier.
"Our team hasn't won a game without Allen in the lineup,"
O'Brien said.
Friday's game was the fourth Iverson has missed this
season. Philadelphia lost the previous three, to the
Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and Washington Wizards.
ASSISTS MARK: On Friday, Dickau had 16 assists, a career
high, breaking the mark he established with 10 Wednesday
night against the Houston Rockets.
INJURY: Philadelphia's Kenny Thomas went out near the end
of the first half Friday with a possible broken nose.
He did not play in the second half.
