LOS ANGELES -- Earlier this month, Hornets second-year
forward David West looked unsure carrying out his offensive
responsibilities during games. But lately, West has shown
improvement.
And Coach Byron Scott has noticed the change, especially
during Friday's 95-86 loss to the Phoenix Suns. West came
off the bench to score 13 points and grab eight rebounds
in 24 minutes.
With starting center Jamaal Magloire sidelined with a
fractured right ring finger, power forward P.J. Brown
started at center Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers,
forcing West into his first start of the season.
"I think West is starting to play much better," Scott said.
"I think with P.J. and David in there, that gives us a
little more speed, and we'll probably run a little more."
After 11 games, West is averaging 5.9 points and is the
team's third-leading rebounder, grabbing 4.6.
"Earlier this season, I was unable to get in a comfort
zone," said West, who is averaging 14.2 minutes. "As time
goes on, you learn and understand the different spots that
you're supposed to be in. I'm just really trying to make
plays, and I've been constantly going over the offense to
understand where I'm supposed to be. I don't think nothing
is really complicated."
INJURY UPDATE: After Magloire gets examined today by a hand
specialist in New Orleans, the Hornets will know if he will
require surgery, Hornets spokesman Scott Hall said. Scott
expects that Magloire's injury will keep him sidelined from
three to four weeks. Since missing eight games during his
rookie season in 2000-01, Magloire had played in every game
the past three seasons.
UNSUCCESSFUL: Entering Sunday, the Hornets had lost 11 of
their past 14 games against the Lakers.
FREE-THROW SUCCESS: Hornets guard David Wesley has made 23
of 24 free-throw attempts after 11 games. Brown entered
Sunday's game making 21 of 23 free-throw attempts.
REFRESHER COURSE: Brown said he used Saturday's practice
at the Staples Center to go over hisnew responsibilities
at center. It helps that Brown worked at center during
training camp.
"I'm looking forward to the challenge, but I had to refresh
a little to get ready," Brown said.
QUICK SHOTS: Baron Davis, Brown and Magloire are the Hornets'
representatives on the NBA All-Star ballot. . . . Former
Hornets coach Paul Silas, who coaches the Cleveland Cavaliers,
attended Sunday's game with his son Stephen Silas, a former
Hornets' assistant. The Cavaliers play the Los Angeles Clippers
tonight at the Staples Center.
