Davis shows some progress for return
He goes through a full practice but is still not 100 percent

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. -- Hornets point guard Baron Davis went
through his first full practice since last month's injury
and showed some limited progress.
Davis, who has been on the injured list since Nov. 17 with
an inflamed disc in his back, said he went through everything
but still hasn't regained his quick burst on drives and he
was unable to dunk.
"I'm obviously not where I would like to be," Davis said
before Sunday's game against Sacramento. "A lot of quickness
is there, but I'm just waiting for explosion to come. But
one of the most difficult things about being injured is not
knowing when you're going to be at 100 percent."
Coach Byron Scott said Davis will practice with the team
today and then participate in Tuesday morning's shoot-around
at the Staples Center before the Hornets play the Los Angeles
Clippers.
"I will then sit down with Baron and talk about where he is,
and then I'll talk to our trainer (Terry Kofler) to give him
my assessment and get his as well. Then we'll decide how many
more practices he might need."
Scott all but ruled out Davis coming off the injured list
before Tuesday's game. But it could happen before the Hornets
play the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday at Gund Arena. When
Davis returns, backup point guard Alex Garcia will take his
spot on the injured list. Garcia is out for the season with
a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
"It would be great to get him back and I would have loved for
him to have played (Sunday)," Scott said. "But that's not
possible. I've got to look out for his best interest and it's
getting him back in shape. Second, we have to see if he has
any pain. If he doesn't, then we'll take the next step. I
could tell in the practice that his timing was off and there
were a lot of things that he forgot on the offensive end. But
those are things that will come back fairly quickly."
Davis has missed 18 consecutive games since injuring his back
after taking a 3-point shot against the Atlanta Hawks on Nov.
12 at New Orleans Arena.
"The one thing I've been doing is working on different aspects
of my game," Davis said. "I couldn't do much movement during
the past two weeks, but I worked on my shooting, taking mid-
range jumpers and free throws. I know in our offense there are
a lot of mid-range shot opportunities."
CHANGING OF ROUTINE: Normally on extended road trips, the
Hornets depart after the game to their next destination. But
Scott changed that routine Sunday night. The Hornets will
remain in Sacramento today for practice before departing for
Los Angeles. They play the Clippers on Tuesday night and the
Lakers on Wednesday.
"I want us to get a good practice in with no distractions,"
Scott said. "I think once we get to L.A. everybody kind of
goes their own separate ways, even myself because I'm from
there."
FAST START: Forward P.J. Brown made his first four shots at
the start of the game and had 10 points after the opening
nine minutes. Brown entered averaging 10.3 points. . . .
Guard Dan Dickau came off the bench and made all three shots
for eight points in the first quarter. . . . The Hornets
made 11 of 17 shots in the quarter but they had to settle
for a tied score at 28 entering the second quarter.
CATCHING A BREAK: Kings forward Chris Webber missed Sunday's
game because of a sore left knee. Webber is the Kings'
leading scorer with a 20.5 scoring average.
