Jackson, apparently miffed at being traded to the team with the worst record in the NBA, is subject to numerous fines from the Hornets and the NBA. Based on his $2.475 million salary, Jackson lost a game check of $27,500 for missing Wednesday night's 107-96 loss against the Phoenix Suns, 1/90th of his annual salary. Jackson also can be fined for being absent from practice, the first of which is today at the Alario Center. Jackson's agent, Atlanta-based Mark Termini, did not return calls Wednesday seeking comment. Hornets general manager Allan Bristow said Wednesday night that Jackson told the team of his decision not to report Tuesday during a 50-minute conference call that included coach Byron Scott, director of player personnel Jeff Bower, and Termini. "He explained his side," Bristow said, "and we had an opportunity to express our feelings that he could come in and start this year and maybe next year. We're looking more maybe next year than this year, because of all the injuries and trying to get everybody back together. Jim Jackson would be a big part of that." Said Scott: "I got the feeling from the conversation that he didn't plan on showing up. He said he was disappointed and that he didn't want to start over. He wants to have a chance to win a championship, just like 200 other players in this league." Jackson was obtained by the Hornets, along with forward Bostjan Nachbar, on Monday in exchange for veteran guard David Wesley. The Hornets could have voided the deal within 48 hours, by 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. But Bristow decided to go ahead with the transaction. "The trade is done; it was really no decision at all," Bristow said. "Jim is 34 years old. He's been in the league for 12 years. Being traded is traumatic for any player. I've experienced it. Coach Scott has experienced it. Right now Jim needs some time to think about coming here to New Orleans. Hopefully he'll make the right decision to come. The lines of communication are open. "We're 2-25, and certainly that's a very discouraging mark. But over the last 14 years, we've been winners, .500 or better. And we don't plan to be in this position very long. We have to turn this thing around. And the way to do that is certainly you've got to get healthy. But you also make trades along the way." New Orleans would be the 11th stop of Jackson's career. He has previously played with Dallas, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Golden State, Portland, Atlanta, Cleveland, Miami and Sacramento before joining Houston, where he signed as a free agent prior to the 2003-04 season. In 24 games with the Rockets this season, Jackson, 6 feet 6, averaged 13.3 points and 4.8 rebounds. Nachbar, 6-9, 221 pounds, arrived in New Orleans on Tuesday. Nachbar wanted, Scott said, to fly to meet the team in Indianapolis on Monday. He participated in Wednesday morning's shootaround at New Orleans Arena and checked into the game against the Suns with 2:11 to go in the first quarter. He hit his first shot, a baseline jumper, 18 seconds later. Nachbar finished with seven points and seven rebounds in 29 minutes. "I was hoping to get a chance to go to another team to get more of a chance to play and show what I can do," said Nachbar, a Slovenian who was brought in for a tryout by the Hornets prior to the 2002 draft. "It wasn't working out in Houston. So I was happy when I found out. "I like to run a lot in the transition game. I see myself as a good shooter, too. I have worked on my shot in a lot in the last couple of years and improved it a lot. The most important thing is I'm a guy who's going to come in here and work hard to improve his game. I'm never happy with myself. I always want to take a step forward." . . . . . . .
