N.O. trades Jackson for three players
Hornets get Jacobsen, 2 forwards from Suns for disgruntled guard

The Hornets sent disgruntled shooting guard Jim Jackson to
the Phoenix Suns on Friday for shooting guard Casey Jacobsen,
forward Maciej Lampe and forward Jackson Vroman.
The Suns also received the Hornets' second-round draft pick
they had obtained from the Dallas Mavericks as part of the
deal Dec. 3 to get guard Dan Dickau for veteran Darrell
Armstrong.
Jackson had refused to report to the Hornets since he was
obtained Dec. 27 in a trade from the Houston Rockets. He
was suspended indefinitely and fined $27,500 per game. Last
week, Jackson told his hometown newspaper, The Toledo Blade,
that he didn't want to start over on a rebuilding team like
the Hornets.
In all, Jackson missed 11 games and was fined $302,500. His
contract is worth $2.4 million this season.
"We have concluded our little 25-day tenure with Jim Jackson,"
Hornets general manager Allan Bristow said at the start of
Friday's news conference to announce the trade. "This was a
trade just waiting to happen.
"We got three players that we feel like can come in here and
deserve a shot to play. We feel they're going to be instrumental
in the remaining 40-something games that we have left. We not
only looked at this trade for the rest of this season, but
also the future."
Jacobsen, 23, is in the final year of his contract that pays
$1,082,160 this season. Both Lampe, 19, and Vroman, 23, have
a year remaining on their contracts after this season.
All three players are expected to arrive in time to be
available to play in tonight's game against the Los Angeles
Clippers at New Orleans Arena.
To make room, the Hornets waived promising point guard Junior
Harrington and forward Matt Freije. Harrington was signed as
a free agent before the start of the season and won a roster
spot in training camp. He had averaged 6.4 points and 2.4
assists in 23 games. Freije was signed as a free agent in
November and had averaged four points in 23 games.
Hornets coach Byron Scott could not be reached for comment
Friday night after the deal was completed, but he said last
week that you always do deals to improve your team. Scott
also said he wasn't spending much time thinking about
Jackson's refusal to report.
At least six teams had expressed an interest to make a trade
for Jackson, Bristow said. But serious trade discussions
between the Suns and Hornets had occurred for the past three
to four days.
Since the offseason, the Hornets have strived to become younger
and more athletic. They now get three players who are 23 years
old or younger. All three can play multiple positions.
In Jacobsen, they get an effective perimeter shooter who is 6
feet 6 and can also play small forward. He was a first-round
draft pick by the Suns in 2002 and this season was their top
player off the bench, averaging 5.3 points in 40 games.
Lampe, who is 6-11 and also can play center, was obtained by
the Suns in a trade with the New York Knicks in January 2004
and had played in 16 games this season and averaged 2.8 points.
Vroman, a 6-10 rookie, had averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds
in 10 games.
Phoenix president and general manager Bryan Colangelo was
willing to make the trade because he thinks Jackson can
provide needed depth for the Suns, who are one of the top
teams in the league with a 31-9 record.
"Jim should significantly increase our bench productivity,"
Colangelo told The Associated Press. "He is a savvy vet whose
game fits our system well."
Jackson's refusal to report to the Hornets didn't go over well
with owner George Shinn, who eventually gave Bristow the go-
ahead to seek a deal.
"If he doesn't like us, forget him," Shinn said before the
deal was announced. "If he had reported, he probably would
have been a poison in the locker room. He would have been
unhappy, and he's going to make everybody else unhappy. The
best thing to do was make the deal and help him find a team
that he wants to play for."
Bristow also said the Hornets are not interested in trading
Baron Davis, who has been linked to several trade rumors for
the past month.
"We're not entertaining anything," Bristow said. "He's the
guy that we need healthy and playing."
