Guaranteed contracts frustrating Scott
Coach: NBA should mimic NFL contracts
Thursday, March 03, 2005

Coach Byron Scott said the level of play in the NBA would
be raised and fewer players would be willing to sit out
games because of minor injuries if their contracts were
not guaranteed.
"These guys have got guaranteed contracts, and they get a
broken fingernail and say, 'I'm out for two weeks,' "
Scott said. "Basketball should be just like the NFL, with
no guarantee contracts. In the NFL, you see guys with
broken arms trying to get in there because they know they
can get cut tomorrow."
Scott did not mention former guard Baron Davis. But Scott
was frustrated with Davis' slow recovery from a bruised
Achilles tendon before he was traded last week to the
Golden State Warriors.
Since 2002, when Davis signed a seven-year, $84 million
guaranteed contract, he has not played a full season. He
missed 34 games this season.
Scott suggested that it wouldn't be a bad idea for teams
to have only one or two players with guaranteed contracts,
with the rest not having guaranteed deals.
The league and players association are negotiating for a
collective bargaining agreement. The owners want to cut
the length of maximum guaranteed contracts from seven
years to four. The players association wants to keep it
at seven. The current collective bargaining agreement
expires July 1.
GETTING IN SOME WORK: Hornets center Jamaal Magloire
practiced during Wednesday's shootaround, his first
extensive work since fracturing his right ring finger in
a November game against the Phoenix Suns.
Magloire went through several ball-handling and shooting
drills, with a lack of conditioning his only limitation.
Magloire, an All-Star last season, has been on the
injured list since Dec. 4, missing 44 games.
Second-year forward David West, who has missed 42 games
with a bone bruise in his right knee, also worked Wednesday.
But Scott said Magloire is closer to being ready than West.
"I think for Cat (Magloire) it's going be two weeks or
less, but we have to get him back to game condition,"
Scott said.
"With David, I don't yet. But he moved real well, which
is something I hadn't seen in awhile. We have to see how
he feels (today) to determine if he has any swelling.
Maybe we can have both of those guys back in two weeks."
TOP ROOKIE: For the past month, rookie guard J.R. Smith
has been showing up for practice 30 minutes early to get
in some work. It's something Smith likely will continue
for the remainder of the season, because for the second
consecutive month he's earned the Western Conference Rookie
of the Month honors. In 16 games during February, Smith
averaged 14.6 points, and scored 15 or more points in
seven consecutive games.
He scored a season-high 25 points in a 101-78 loss to the
San Antonio Spurs on Feb. 16. In a Feb. 9 victory against
the Portland Trail Blazers, Smith scored 19 points and
had two blocks and two steals. During the Hornets' three
victories during the month, Smith averaged 17.3 points
and 4.7 assists.
In Wednesday game against the Charlotte Hornets, Smith
had 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the first half. He
entered averaging 7.9 points per game.
