Hornets center Jamaal Magloire, who has missed games for
the past three months with a fractured ring finger, is
eager to get back on the court.
Magloire practiced this week with no limitations, other
than stiffness in his finger, and is due to return in
two weeks.
"The doctor said that's to be expected, and I just have
to deal with it until it fully heals," Magloire said.
"I have no reservations. I'm just so damn anxious just
to be out there with my teammates. Nothing else really
comes to mind other than I want to play."
Magloire remains on the injured list and hasn't played
since a November game against the Phoenix Suns, when he
suffered the injury after deflecting a pass in the final
minute. To fill his spot, Coach Byron Scott moved P.J.
Brown from power forward to center.
"I knew with all the time out, it would be an adjustment
coming back," Magloire said. "Three months is a long time,
but I continue to stay positive. I did a lot of conditioning
on my own, watched film and studied the game.
"I don't think I'll have too much to make up. I think the
biggest thing is the conditioning. I look at every situation
as a positive and negative. I broke my (finger), but it
could have been worse. I was thankful that it was only a
minor injury."
After Thursday's practice, Scott was impressed that Magloire
had remembered most of the offensive sets.
"It's just a matter of him getting into shape," Scott said.
"After three or four trips up and down the court, he's not
used to guys right now grabbing, holding and banging him.
But he didn't seem to have any problems catching or shooting."
WANTED BACK: Scott said the Hornets are going to try to
re-sign starting guard Dan Dickau, who becomes a free agent
after the season. Dickau, obtained in a December trade from
the Dallas Mavericks, is a candidate for Most Improved
Player in the league.
"We're going to definitely talk about what we want to do
to keep him here," Scott said. "I think he's proven that
he obviously can play in this league. Allan (Bristow) is
a genius, pulling off that trade."
NEW ROLE: Forward Jackson Vroman has averaged 8.7 points
and nine rebounds in his first three games as a starter.
He is a physical player, but has missed several close-range
shots.
"I've got a lot of areas to improve, but first is finishing,"
Vroman said. "A lot of times, I can outquick the guy to the
basket."
The Hornets have yet to decide if Vroman will be re-signed,
but Scott likes his toughness.
"We need a couple of more Jacksons, with the physical part
of the game he plays," Scott said. "All of these guys are
going to be given an opportunity to show what they can do.
Like I told them, I hope everybody on this team can be in
the league for 10 or 12 years, even it's not with this
organization."
ADJUSTING: In his first three games with the Hornets, guard
Speedy Claxton has made two of 13 shots and has 18 assists
and seven turnovers. Claxton was obtained in a trade from
Golden State, along with forward Dale Davis, on Feb. 24 in
exchange for guard Baron Davis.
ROOKIE PROGRESS: Guard J.R. Smith earned the league's Rookie
of the Month award for the second consecutive month. In the
past 10 games, he has averaged 16.8 points and made 48.4
percent of his shots.
QUICK SHOTS: Entering Friday, Brown has averaged 12 points
and 14.5 rebounds in the past two games. . . . In the past
four games, the Hornets' bench has outscored their opponents'
bench 158-114. . . . When the Hornets held the Charlotte
Bobcats to 85 points Wednesday night, it was the second
time in the past 16 games that they held an opponent to
less than 90 points.
