Pirates manager search: Farrell likely to stay with Series winner

The Pirates likely won't have an announcement concerning their new manager
tomorrow. It also seems that whenever they do make that announcement it won't
involve John Farrell.
Farrell, the Boston pitching coach who probably is -- or was -- high on
Pirates general manager Neal Huntington's interview list, is said to be
strongly leaning toward remaining with the Red Sox.
Farrell, who succeeded Huntington as Cleveland's minor-league director six
years ago, joined the Red Sox just last winter, and it's believed he would
prefer to stay in Boston rather than leave after one season. The Red Sox, who
paid Farrell an estimated $350,000 in 2007, want him to stay and might
sweeten his salary as an incentive.
Huntington will interview Cleveland third base coach Joel Skinner today,
according to a source. Skinner couldn't be reached for comment yesterday.
Joey Cora, the Chicago White Sox bench coach, also is likely to be interview,
probably in Florida. Cora lives in Miami; baseball's general manager meetings
begin Monday in Orlando.
Los Angeles Dodgers bench coach Dave Jauss' name has cropped up as a possible
managerial candidate, but he did not return phone calls yesterday seeking
confirmation.
As has been his wont, Huntington was politely tight-lipped about the
situation.
"The process is ongoing," was all he said.
Two coaches with ties to the Pirates, Class AAA Indianapolis manager Trent
Jewett and John Russell, a former third base coach, are believed to have had
interviews with Huntington.
If the Pirates don't have a new manager by tomorrow, that announcement could
be delayed until Nov. 12. "The general manager meetings could impact the
process," Huntington said. Those meetings end Nov. 8.
It is possible the Pirates could make at least one announcement within the
next week.
Huntington has focused a lot this week on hiring a scouting director and a
minor-league director and could announce those decisions from Orlando.
