Surgery ends Dumatrait's season
Lefty has arthroscopic procedure on throwing shoulder
==
Pirates pitcher Phil Dumatrait underwent minor arthroscopic left shoulder
surgery Friday morning and will miss the remainder of the 2008 season,
manager John Russell said Friday.
The 27-year-old will likely be ready to begin a throwing program in October
and return fully ready for 2009 Spring Training, Russell said.
The surgery, performed at Allegheny General Hospital, was intended to
alleviate irritation in the area above Dumatrait's left rotator cuff. The
lefty has made only one start in the past seven weeks after landing on the
disabled list June 22 with rotator cuff tendinitis. He returned to action
July 7, but felt pain in his pitching shoulder and was put back on the
disabled list the following day.
Dumatrait began 2008 in Pittsburgh's bullpen and joined its rotation in May.
He went 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA in his first six starts, but later cooled off,
going 1-2 with a 9.00 ERA in his final five starts.
