PHILADELPHIA -- Adam LaRoche has never played at Class A, but he'll get his
first introduction on Monday, when the Pirates' first baseman joins the
Hickory Crawdads in the South Atlantic League.
It works for LaRoche, who is coming off the 15-day disabled list with a
right intercostal strain (a strain in the right rib cage area). He's trying
to get his timing down and the Crawdads will be on an eight-game homestand.
Triple-A Indianapolis and Double-A Altoona did not have scheduling that was
conducive for LaRoche to be assigned to either affiliate.
The Pirates want LaRoche in one place before bringing him back up later this
week. LaRoche was scheduled to leave the Pirates on Sunday in Philadelphia on
a 5 p.m. ET flight to join the Crawdads.
"I'll go down there and get evaluated and play a couple of days down there in
Hickory," LaRoche said. "I feel great, and I felt great hitting [Saturday]
and again today. I'll play a couple of games and be back. To me, I see it as
a step back to playing. I just want to make sure it feels good to hit live."
Bucs manager John Russell is counting on LaRoche to return by the end of the
week.
"I expect to see Adam back sometime this week, if everything goes right,"
Russell said. "Hickory was the only solid place we could send him. We're
sending him there just to get live at-bats. We're set with Adam with one
place to play."
